SutaarlpUoaa PTbW aa Advaaca S Comment in Brief THURSDAY'S news from the Balkans appears badly con- I fused, as is customary at this stage of a big military ac tion. There are a few gleams of hope for the allied forces re- ststrng the great German machine, but in general the situa tion remains gloomy, indeed, for sympathizers with the Brit ish and their partners. It appears to be well established that Greece has been slashed in two, that Yugoslavia's defenses have been badly scattered, and that unless something happens soon to the axis push it will rush on to final triumph in southeastern Europe. ; Hitler's military machine thus far has proved itself in vincible in land attacks. The possibility of a German assault on Turkey is not ucmg uioi luuntu. u cuunua; a ucna ICIU11CU bile X UTR" ish government as "tranquil" in the face of the approach ing German legions, but by Thursday the Turks were get ting scared. VTASHINGTON, April 10 Any military authority around here who expected the Yugoslavs to hold out longer than three to six weeks from the start was considered an opt! mist by his colleagues. The long. est possible period of resistance suggested even by a Yugoslav source was four months. But even six weeks of German ab sorption In the Balkan fighting could delay the chances of an Invasion attack on Britain until fall. Shortest night In the year Is June 22, and the Germans must have the protection of darkness to make the effort. Conviquently the official strat egist 'expect the next Hitler blow will be directed against Gibraltar Instead of Britain. If that front door to the Mediter ranean can be locked and the Balkans seixed, the British can be Isolated around the Suez In this second year of World war 11. This, however, will not bring the German victory Hitler prom ised nis people for 1841. SHORT-LIVED German successes are expected to be short-lived along the north African route over which Wav ell's army chased the Italians only a few months ago. They were made possible not only be cause General VYavell stripped his forces for Greece but because all British naval unit are tied up in the Greek supply lines. The British laid a email mine field between Sicily and Tripoli, expecting It to prevent the send ing of larse German reinforce menu to north Africa. Italians swept it clear and now the path across the Mediterranean Is wide open. The British may have to fall back to their fortifications on the Egyptian border, but probably no further. IRAQ TROUBLE That nail sympathizer who has taken over the government of Iraq will be chased by British troops as soon as they clean up the Italians In east Africa. To support the various British en terprises in the Near East, the British troops in Iraq were with drawn some months ago, en abling the hazls to stage the In ternal coup. a . a YUGO LINE Strongest Yugoslav defense line ran from the northeastern point of Zagreb, southeastward to a point about 50 miles north of Skoplje, and then eastward to the Bulgarian border. It was be hind this line the Yugo planned to make their strongest stand. Hurled against the Greek fortifications (In a manner used earlier In Bel- glum) they met with some success. a "DONOVAN'S WAR" Some officers In this govern ment refer to the Balkan con flict as "Colonel Donovan's war." and they do not Ilk it They cannot see tha chances for long range British success. Their story Is that Donovan cama back from Sofia and Belgrade early In tha year and sold the British on the possibilities of major Balkan resistance. If It fails they fear British morale will suffer. There are some here also who doubt that the American people have a realiaUc view of what little this country can actually do immediately to help Yugo slavia and Greece. Their caustic crack: "We can only give Yugo slavia all war short of aid." Fighting hearts can defeat military calculations, but if spirit Is ever to conquer again, now is the time and the Balkans is the place for it. WINGS FOR BRITAIN MONTREAL, Canada, (To the Editor) In recent months many people in the United States and Canada have contributed toward the purchase of planes to aid the British and allied air forces. This money has usually been sent direct to England, with no provision to allocate these con tributions to a definite plane. Wings for Britain has been formed to fill this zap and pro vides an address to which Amer ican citizens may legally send contributions for airplanes, with out violation of the neutrality act Individuals, groups, clubs, etc., who have contributed to Wings for Britain are given full credit and keep their own Iden tity. There are no deductions from contributions, as all ex penses have been provided privately. The committee has made the following arrangement with Lord Beaverbrook, minister of aircraft production in Great Britain: 'Aircraft will be named after donor or community. Information about airplane's battle record will be communi cated, subject to necessity of withholding Information from the enemy. Photograph of the named plane will be sent as soon as it ready to Join unit. Public announcement will be made in the press. $20,000 acquires the right to When In Medford Star at HOTEL HOLLAND Thoroughly Modern Joe and Ann Earlay Proprietors - have fighter named. $80,000 confers same right over bomber." This applies to both British and American made planes. The "Searle Grain," the "King's Messenger," and now the "New York Lin" Is the third Spitfire to be named through Wings for Britain. The Linen Trade Association, Inc., 43 East 17th Street New York, N. Y., presented a check for $20,000 to J. W. McConnell, chairman of Wings for Britain, through Wen dell Willkie, in Montreal, March 25. Very truly yours. ROBERT W. BINGHAM. JAIL PROBLEM KLAMATH FALLS, Ore., (To the Editor) We noticed in last night's paper that the city jail has been condemned again. The League of Women Voters is probably the only organization in the city whose membership has inspected the place. The combination of sight and smell is Indescribably horrible. We have felt that every man's club and every woman's club should visit this dungeon and see the hopelessness of the efforts of our police officers to keep it clean The city Jail is not only a men ace to the health of the people incarcerated therein but to the city and county as well. Your article states that the city may take over the engineer's office as an addition, but we can not see that that will improve the situation, for it will lack ventilation and the srwer gas will remain. Furthermore, in case of fire, how would the prisoners escape? We feel that all sanitation authorities would condemn the place and that the only solution is to build a new Jail in conjunc tion with the county. This will save both the city and county expense in maintenance. Before anything definite Is done about remodeling the city Jail, the League of Women Voters would like to suggest to Mayor Houston that he appoint a committee to Investigate the problem and find the most ef ficient, economical, humane and sanitary solution. Yours very truly, Mrs. Kenneth Bayless, Mrs. W. H. MacMillan, Mrs. Nelson Reed, Executive jail committee for the League of Women Voters.
