Watch the Clssslfled Pagel By FRED HAMPSON Associated Press Staff Writer Les Steers is only a sopho more with his high-lumping fu ture stretching ahead full of promise, but already the San Mateo Junior college boy wno escaped to the University of Ore gon, is a stylist. At an age and time in life when the average trackster is Just beginning to polish off the rough edges, Lester is already a technician. So said Harry Leeding of the Oregon Journal after watching the Oregon kan garoo loft himself over the bar at 8 feet, 91 inches last Friday In the Hill relays at Portland. Most of the great high Jump ers at one time or another per formed in Portland and Harry saw when all but "Steers is the best I've aver looked at If he doesn't get his nam In the book with a seven-toot Jump It'll Just be bad luck an accident, or from some other unpredictable resson." Leeding saw Cornelius John son hich lump few seasons back. Johnson was an artist at it, flawless in form, with every ounce of energy schooled to Jumping. He'd been at it for years. Yet. Leeding thinks Steers now is as perfect In style. "He's as straight as a board at the top of hi Jump," the Jour nal sportster said. "He Jumps, straightens out, comes down In a single, fluid action. No flop ping elbows, dragging legs to knock the bar off. If he falls to clear the bar it's because he didn't iumo high enough, not because he did it badly." Short takes: E. E. Billy Hulen of th Medford Mall-Trubun says: "Wisconsin's 39-34 victory over WSC for th national collegiate basketball ti tle proves one thing that How ard Hobson's Oregon Wbfoots of 1939 still rank as th great est quintet ever turned loos on th Pacific seaboard." e e Jimmy Newquist, th Camas fullback on whom th Universi ty of Oregon pins much hope, is at a firm 188 pounds, writes Dick 8 trite of th Eugene Reg ister Guard. He's already well conditioned front spring: rehear- Promoter Tex Salkeld Is still planning on an Al Hostak ap pearance In Salem com July or August despite the fact that Al's victory over Ben Brown put him back in th money. Fred Zimmerman of th Capi tal Journal in Salem makes this rebuttal to other towns bidding for th state prep basketball tournament: "We have an idea that when th OHSAA receives Its check, representing th prof- It from th recent slat basket ball tournament. It will have a convincing argument against moving th show from the Wil lamette campus." Seattle friends hear that De troit, despairing of ever getting Its $100,000 out of Freddie Hutchinson as a pitcher, may try him as a first baseman. The kid can hit. In this regard, you may recall th Tigers stationed Hutch on th first pillow during March before Rudy York signed.
