Midland Cmptie FFATEAWI OF MALIN TAKES SPEECH PRIZE MALIN The Malin FFA tun won the touthem Oregon par liamentary contest held at Grants Pan last week. This gives the Malta squad the orivilege to represent the southern Oregon district in the state. contest held at Corvallis April 23 to compete with the winners from the live other dis tricts. A. E. Street's boys are the only team to win the banner twice, having won In 1939. The first team to win the banner three times will keep it per manently. The Malta boys have three times won the sub-district banner which they will keep. A. E. Street is the advisor for the team composed of Donald Ratliif, president; Marion Kirk pa trick, vice president; Bob Short, secretary; Edward McCul ly, treasurer, and Joe Cholard, recorder. Dairy DAIRY Mrs. Franklin Arant and daughter Darlene, and Mrs. Martin Stoeshler, all of Dairy, left by auto Friday morning for Sacramento, where they plan two weeks visit with their moth er and grandmother, Mrs. Ralph Scott and husband. The Scotts are former residents of Klam ath county. Mrs. John Jones and Mrs. Art Brewer spent Sunday afternoon with Mrs. Marion Barnes and family of Olene. Mr. Heldt of Klamath Falls, Albert Burgdorf and son Eldon, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Rueck, Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Schanz and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rueck and son Buddy, were din ner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hoefler and family Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Arant and Martha McCumber visited on Saturday evening with their brother. Albert Burgdorf and son. Mrs. E. B. Schmoe and son Fred spent Saturday at Sprague River on business and visiting friends. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Hill of Merrill, accompanied by Mrs. Hill's daughter of Portland, vis ited with their old friends in the Hoefler home on Sunday after noon. - . . Mr. and Mrs. Emil Flackus and son Walbert of Ashland, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Meyers of Dunsmuir, Calif., motored here on Monday to attend the funeral services for Flackus mother. who passed away on Friday, They also visited for a short time with other relatives of Dairy and Hildebrand. Sympathy from the Dairy community goes to the Flackus families on the loss of their mother and grandmother, and to the Brown families of Lan- gell Valley on loss of their hus band and father. Mr. and Mrs. John Liskey of Merrill spent Monday afternoon in this community visiting old friends and attending the fu neral of Grandma Flackus. Sprague River SPRAGUE RIVER Mr. and Mrs. Ray Marchant drove to Bo nanza Tuesday to attend the fu neral of Cyrus Brown, promi nent Langell valley farmer. Mar- chant worked several years on Brown's farm. Holmes Gabbert, personal rep resentative of the Master En gravers company of Portland, vis ited the Sprague River school Monday, March 17. He showed samples of class Jewelry and pre sented the school with several medals and a beautiful scholar ship plaque. Roland Young left Sunday for Dunsmuir, Calif., where he will work in the engineering depart ment of the Southern Pacific railroad. Young has for the past month been employed on the section of the Ewauna Box com pany railroad, Mrs. Louis Croly was hostess to the Sprague River Bridge club at its regular weekly meet ing Tuesday, March 18. After dessert the club members enjoy ed an afternoon of bridge. Mrs. Vertis Swearingen was voted in as a member in a short business meeting held by the club. Joe Young and Clarence and Edward Moore have purchased 16 lots in the vicinity of the present Passolt cabins. The men will construct a number of cabins to be rented out The Moores arrived in Sprague River last week from Missouri. Because of improved weather conditions the Sprague River mill and box factory is running at practically full force. The slippery and muddy condition of the grounds has practically stop ped activity on the yards during the past two months. Due to several recent gradings of the Sprague River-Chiloquin road the road is said to be in good shape. Most of the work was done by the Indian service grader. The road has been closed a good deal during the winter months. Merrill. Malin Births Iteporied MERRILL Born at the Wil son hospital, Merrill, March 13, to Mr. and Mrs. Earle Belvin of Malin, a boy, named Robert Edward. Weight 7 pounds. Also born on March 13, to Mr. and Mrs. Wilsord Hundley of Merrill, a daughter, named Bar bara Lynn. Weight 6 pounds. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Battista Salvaradi of Merrill on March 17, a 6i pound son, Patrick John Battista Salvaradi. Altamont Mr. Jack ' Nelson of Bisbee street has been seriously ill the past week. Mr. Nelson is a pa tient at Hillside hospital. Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Roberts of Altamont drive spent Sunday and Monday at Lebanon, Ore. Mrs. Conway, Mrs. Roberts' mother, returned with them to make her home in Altamont. Mr. William Rutledce of 4108 Altamont drive returned to Port land last week where he is under medical attendance at the state hopital for an arm injury. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Mansfield, Dorothy Mansfield and Carol Fontania of Redding. Cal., were visitors at the Walter Hanson home in Altamont and Frank Cardoza home in Klamath Falls. Mr. Bill Bailey has furnished his new house on Altamont drive and is now residing in it. It was formerly part of the E. O. Ar nold place. Mrs. Nancy Carroll has re turned to Dorris, Calif., after several weeks spent with her daughter, Mrs. Ona Bagley. Mrs. Robinette substituted for Miss V. Liskey at Altamont ele mentary school last week on account of illness. Sharon and Lynn Campbell are both ill at the family home at 4118 Altamont drive. Mrs. Lucinda Plunkett and Mr. J. Staub of Dorris, Calif., were visitors at the Ona Bag- ley home, Tuesday. Mrs. Weslfy Harsey of Bisbee street is confined to her home with the measles. Miss Helen Eckert, dauzhter of Mr and Mrs. Harry Eckert of Laverne avenue, is confined to her home with the mumps. Mr. Owen Campbell has com pleted his new house on Alta mont drive Bnd Mr. and Mrs. Everett Burkhard are residing in it. Mrs. I. W. White and daughter Muriel are on this week's sick list. Aleut LOST RIVER CLUB MERRILL The Lost River Garden club will hold its regu lar monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Dan Barry Tuesday, March 25. Program for the afternoon will consist of the roll call to be answered by giving botanical and common names for plants; "Annual Plant and Germination of Seed and Successful Varieties" by Mrs. Walter Robinson: talk on "Edgings." by Mrs. Williams of Henley. The flower arrange ment for the day will be made by Mrs. Dan Cashman. All in terested in gardening and beau tifying their yards are welcome to attend. Malin School To Hold 'Slant IN'ighi' Program MAUN The Malin senior and junior high school are par ticipating in a "Stunt Night" program to be held in the high school gym, Friday, March 21. A winner will be picked from each group with the privilege of putting their class numerals on the pennant. The best stunt given will take part In the coun ty skit festival. The program will also consist of numbers by the glee club and the school band. The following skits will be presented: "Football Heroines," by the eighth grade; "I'm in the Army Now?" by the ninth grade; "Tenny Tennyson's Tipsey Tele vision Tour." by the tenth grade; The Gossipal Truth," by the eleventh grade; "Doctor No-See's Dilemma," by the senior class. Everyone is invited to attend for an evening of fun. Midland Those attending the state high school basketball tournament at Salem over last weekend were Philip Anderson, Amos Burnett, Roy Anderson. Harold Hayes, Howard Holiday and Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Largent. Mr. and Mrs. Almond Greg ory have returned home after an extended visit to New Or leans and other points. Mr. and Mrs. James Britton, who have resided on the B ram well ranch for the past year, have moved to the Sisters ranch near Texum. Mr. and Mrs. George Man ning and family have moved to the Eramwell ranch. Mr. and Mrs. John Hooper are receiving congratulations on daughter born March 12 at Klamath Valley hospital. Mrs. H. B. Largent returned home Sunday frpm Corvallis where she was a delegate to a lecture school sponsored by the Midland grange. Mr. and Mrs. Phil Motschen bacher and Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Stewart and family visited at Shasta dam Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sweeney and daughter visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oral Heavaline Sunday. Brown of Langell Valley. Mr. Brown passed away at Grants Pass on March 15 om a heart attack. With his son and dauglitrr-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brown, he had been visiting his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Brown, and had started to re turn home when the attack oc curred. Mr. Brown had lived in Lan gell Valley for many years and had friends all over Klamath county who came to pay final respect. He was a member of the Klamath county school board and a director on the Langell Valley irrigation district. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby Brown, his children and their families, Mrs. Wesley Dearborn, Mrs. Herb Johnson, Dale, Frank and Burton Brown, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Brown of Grants Pass, his sister, Mrs. Mattie MrFall, and a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Cobel of Ellensburg, Wash. Langell Valley Community Club lias Soeial Meet LANGELL VALLEY Friday night the Community club spon sored an 8 o'clock potluck sup per at the hall which was en joyed by 125 members and guests. Following the supper a short business meeting was held, and various committees appoint ed. Then dancing was enjoyed until a late hour. Music was furnished by Bill Noble and Merle Brewster. Main Street Xiitv Free of Poles Completion of telephone pole and line removal between Elev enth and Esplanade on Main street makes Klamath Foils' center avenue entirely pole-free. Manager' Charles E. Seavey of the phone company said Wed nesday. Poles and lines were removed following the cutover into un derground lines of all telephone communication in the downtown section. Underground service now includes all of Main street, Klamath avenue from Seventh to Eleventh streets and Pine street from Fifth to Eleventh. Hager The William Crumrine family went to Redding, Calif., Sunday to spend the day and see the work that is being done in that vicinity.
