It has been (uggested that gardening. and especially the growing of our own foodstuff 1 going to be come In It small way for th home gardener, an Important part of the nation' defense pro gram. It should anyway be part of any householders' health program. I have never been abl to think of any better way to receive one quota of health giving vitamins than to spend long hour out in th sunshine and grow your vitamin necessl- tie right out In your own yard. Probably most gardener are concerned first with food for the body from their vegetable plots and secondly with food tor the soul from th beauty of the flow er and trees and general satis faction from a well kept yard or garden pot. So to get busy. Naturally, the first thing that has to be don to n established garden la to get It cleaned up, and for-those who are Just beginning to get their plot ready. There are too many of us who do not get much cleaning up don in th tall as w should, so If It I don in th spring, un let w are very early wa must be careful ourtelvea and alto watch that our helper, if we hive any, do not become so n thusiastle In tho cleaning up proceat that sprouting plant are damaged by careless feet and rake. Due to the open winter here, most perennials and shrubs seem to have gotten an exira early start, and many are well out of tha ground, while many shrub and trees are leafing out. For (ome reason, probably be cause we are a little tired In the fall from the care of our gar den during the summer, many of us always fail to quite keep up with the transplanting, clean ing and other garden work which we fully Intend to do be fore the bad weather catches up with u. So of course that throws so much more work on ua when spring comes. Seventh Itreet way it doesn't seem to be Such hard work in the spring, because we go at it with renewed strength and Interest. About my only New Year' resolutions hid to do with my gardening activities, t resolved that, a the winter had been rather mild for this country, I would avail myself of every nice day and get that fall neglected worn done up. It did e there for a long time that every time I did get out and get tome thing started, it would rain fain and toak up th ground to that I would have to wait awhile longer, but it it surprising how much was accomplished at that Now I find myself with such a good start on the spring Work that it is a pleasure to know that more It being done than I bad expected. For the past week 1 have been moving Iris. Now authorities on th tubject tell ua that this little Job should be done in the sum mer Just after the Iris have bloomed, and I agree with them. but somehow I always get laty along about that time and want to enjoy my garden, so conse quently that little Job hardly ever gets done until spring. can't see that there is much dif ference in this arrangement in this country for If the transplant ing is done early they bloom tor me just the tame, with the a ccption of course that there are not so many bloom due to the fact that the clumps are divided more or less. As iri do not need water during the summer and are better off without It, it is best to plant them in a situation where there are no other plant that require much water. For year I planted them too deep, but have found that they do much better if (hallow trench is msde with a hoe wide enough to let those thick root spread out The rhizome or thick meaty root should be so near the surface that it is partially expoaed. They do not need very rich soil, and are better off without manure as fertiliser, unless it is in ground that has been used for quite a while. I have been told however, by those who make a Get Your GARDEN TOOLS at MURPHEY'S SEED STORE 421 phone Main St. ' 44IS - 3rv y v- "' GOOD OR BAD T E Oft an average, material and labor for a well designed, at tractive small home and those tor an ugly, poorly designed home In bad taste, cost the same, In other words, good design. which adds tremendously to the resale value and owner-satisfaction ot any home, is not a cost item. The way In which materials are put together tor a home has a tremendous affect upon Its value, and the successful utillza tlon of labor and materials re quires more knowledge than money. True, money can buy knowledge, but It la best to un derstand before you embark upon a home building project- some of the fundamentals of good design. 1. A house should blend with Its neighborhood. This doe not mean it should be like all the other homes In the section, but neither should it stick out like a "ore thumb." 2. A small home should be simple in design snd of good proportions. Simplicity mean a reduction In th number of de sign, elements and a minimum use of different materials. If you start with wood use wood throughout. Don't break your house lines into several small masse through th use of differ ent materials. It ruins the scale and unity and make the house appear much smaller than it ac tually Is. 3. Plain timple root areas and unbroken eaves lines simplify exterior appearance and con struction. They also keep down roofing costs and roof mainte nance costs. 4. Fake ' dormers, gables, chimneys and similar devices should be avoided. They are only a needles expense and are usually glaringly apparent. ft. Remember that a house is visible from all sides. Do not give all your attention to that part facing the street 8. Avoid extreme which may affect the resale value of the house. Good taste In design it always preferable to novelty, It you give consideration to tha site, use common sense in your choice ot materials and mechanical equipment, and an alyte your individual living re quirements your house will re turn full value In home enjoy. ment. The house Is not very wide, but it is long, with a death of 28'B" which permits good room sizes. The plan is a sample of maximum efficiency with th hall communicating with all rooms and th house being basically ineipensiv to build. An attractive arrangement of corner windows adds to the ex terior appearance of the homo and insures excellent ventila tion throughout. The house may be built with or without basement. An unusual feature of thin design is the combination of vertical and horizontal wood siding on the exterior and tha construction of the wood shin, gle hood over tha entrance door.
