The spring before Alex
ander, then consldsred a relic
with little ability left, was
shoved aside by the Chicago
Cubs and then purchased by
the Cards. The Cubs lost In
terest In him when he refused
to accept the rigidity ot a
rookie's training course, but
the Cards, not vlawsd as a con
tender, were glad to acquire
the steadiness and Intelligence
at this veteran.
St. Louis moved through the
National league to a champion
ship and then went Into the
aeries against the American
chsmptona, the Yankees.

brief: Old Alex won two gsmes
and saved a third. The cham
pionship went to 8U Louis,
