Here tho proprietors ot a salt works drilling along too buuks of the river in an effort to increase their supply of salt water, Ulv-ov-ered, much to their amazement and consternation that one of tho wells was discharging a gas in stead ot the salt water they ex pected. Thus, the first uso of natural gas wus mndn in the 1 nltcd Piute. Later, when Lafay ette visited Kredonia and found ihein using cas coming out of such a place, naid it was evidently too near the underworld for bis com fort. IMMr;;WIC I'SK It was not until lSti.'i that any real domestic use of natural gas began. This resulted in tho for mation of the first natural gas corporation in the L'nlted States, which was known as the "Fred- onla Gas. Light and Water Works company." Interesting Facts About Air Butane Method Revealed Liquified Natural Gas Shipped in Tank Cars, Transformed to Vapor and Then Used In Homes by Modern Method; Systems Nearly Self-Operating K. M. I.IXDSAT ' . Oeurral SuH-rintenunt .Natural Oa Corp. at OreiPHl Much interest has been taken by all residents In the operation of the gas plant which has just been completed in this city by the Natural Gas Corporation of Oreyon, particularly as this is an entirely new service in this area. The construction of these plants has only been un dertaken following; a careful study and survey made by engineers of Standard Man- ' agement and Operating Cor- : poration, who have been in direct charge of construe-1 ! tion work, and are believed ' to be an improved type over those generally in use in i other parts of the country. i SOLVES PROBLEM This survey was under taken by Natural Gas Cor poration of Oregon in ap preciation of the great need for such a service in the many communities through out the Pacific Coast who were denied gas service due to the high cost of build i n g manufactured gas plants and the impossibility of building natural gas transmission mains to the more scattered sections of the country. Air butane gas plants are prov ing the solution to this problem. and now all residents In this area may enjoy the same com forts and conveniences of sas for fuel which are enjoyed by their friends tn the neighboring; cities. HKiHLY COMFRKSBF.D First, tbis butane gas ' Is taken from the atills where gas oline Is being made, and then shipped in liaufied form rift unit cars to the community in which it is to be served. These tank cars are of the high press ure type, of heavy steel construc tion and ot approximately 10.0UO gallons capacity. An interesting fact concerning this gas is that enough liquitled gas is eora-i pressed into one ot these tank cars to fill train of tank cars 15U miles long with the gas in its vaporized form! As tbeso tanks arrive,. they are placed on a siding at the gas plant and unloaded into a butano storage tank, if tbe atmosphere preiisure is not sufficient to force the liquid from the tank car. a Hue may be connected from the gas storage holder to the vapiri ration space about the liquid in the tank, which will force the liquid from tbe tank car Into the storage tank at a pressure ot about 75 pounds per square inch. in general, the pressure within the tank car varies from 10 pounds to 20 pounds per square inch. , HEATIXti l'LAXT Each tank Is equipped with a gauge to Indicate the contents, which is never allowed to fall below a two weeks' supplv for the community which is being served. I'ndur this tank Is an electric al heating device which heats the liquid to the vaporization point. when the temperature fRlls tol such an extent as to make this necessary. The average size of the plan: buildiug is 2ix25 feet and they are naturally ot complete fire proof construction, all steel framework, steel roof and red tilo being used for materials.
