I shown by the April Issue of -The Volt,"-- monthly publication of the California Ore gon Power compnny. Thla laaue of "The Volt" will be distributed this week,, and thus will tie In to excellent advantage with "American forest week," April IS to 24. President Conlldge' recent declaration that "A tree saved is a trea grown." Is quite well exem plified by local effort toward fur ther utilisation of waste products. Thinner saws, "knot-hole plugs," and other unique "board-stretchers" are mentioned In the "Volt" story in an entertaining way, which points out that utilisation and elimination of waste Is reflected In definite con servation of timber resource, as when more lumber I recovered from each log, fewer tree have to be cut down to supply existing demands for lumber and lumber proilucta. In addition to being featured In tha picture layout, the Klamath Falls mills are mentioned as follow: The Rwauna Box company, of Klnmnth Falls, developed during 1924 the use of thinner saws, which result In mora board per log, as lea waate results In the nature of aawduat. Experiments which are till being conducted by this concern along this line' are being watched with tryst Internal by other lum bermen. The Rwauna Box company Js now experimenting with a new development a threaded "knot-hole plug" which promise an apprec iable saving In waste when perfect ed. By thla process a small piece of waste lumber la quickly threaded by a machine, like the thread on a ploce 0( pipe, and the knot hole in a low grade piece of lumber Is nlao i threaded out to the proper diameter. xi-m iu muk uiuuiiii ail i screwed Into the revamped knot hole, this making a solid and sub stantial plec of lumber from the former low grade piece, Improving the grade and general usefulness of the lumber subjected to thl op-i eratlon. The Big Lake Box company, also at Klamath Falla, ha been conduct ing experiment similar to those previously described In connection wltb th plant In operation at Hilt.
