time. Two construction pangs, one
worltlnit west and tho other work-
ins; cast, set poles, added cross

The poles were of creosotcd pine,
twenty feet lonff and spaced thirty

hard, soil boles wero drilled by an
air drill, which was operated from
a portuhlo compressor unit mount
ed on a truck.
In this manner two men could
drill 120 boles per day la solid
roek and :r.l) holes In the hard soil.
Tho holes In solW rock ivore
drilled threo feet deep and then
dynuniiled. Thotto in tho hard soil
wero drilled fully four feet and a
stick or so of dynamite did the rest.
In shorn log the dirt holes, care had
to be taken not to put In too (treat
n chares of explosive, for If the
soil was broken too fine and lifted
too lilch in the air the wind would
blow It awny and thero would be
nothing loft for tamping buck
around tho polo.
Rattlesnakes Interfere

accommodations for the members
of tho gangs, camp trains were se
cured from the Texas and Pacllla
Hallway Company and were, out
fitted especially for this Job. Each
train comprised three bunk cars
furnished for a total of forty-eight ,
men, a kitchen car, a water car. a
dining: car, a tool car and mate
rial car. The kitchen, dining and
bunk cars "were well screened. A
portable bath-house with shower
arrangement was also fitted up so
that when It was connected by hose
to the tank on the water car It af
forded' a pleasant means of refresh
ment following a hard day under'
a broiling sun, with the thermome
ter usually around a hundred In tho
shado.
The trains wore easily moved
from ono siding to another and
wero always within six miles at
tho outsldo of the particular Jot
where the construction gang was
at work. Tho kitchen, car ,wai
equipped with another hose, also
connected with the water tank, and
gravity did the rest, so that tho
men who wero detailed to . tho
"kitchen polirc" were saved many
a stop. The wntcr was furnished
by the railroad company as needid,
while groceries and other supplies
wero obtained In wholesalo lots
from tho various towns r.long tho
line.
To tho telephono-nslnff publlo
thero Is a special significance In
tho building of this new transconti
nental route. It affords an impor
tant, additional link in the long dis
tance facilities which tho Hell Sys
tem Is constantly building to meet
tlio demands ot Its natlon wido
Held, and It also provides another
line ot defense" against the un
ruly forces ot Knturo that some
times do damago to even tho best
telephone lines. This new line lies
below tho sleet belt and will rc-
llove considerably tho congestion
:f traffic on the transcontinental
circuits that havo been previously,
established.
