The club Just now Is attracting wide attention by reason of having pro grammed a stellar social event which kb to a lata hour last night was re ported a proceeding riotously. But all of which has notmng 10 no the lead quotation. Mortenson was telling what the club Is, and why l( is what It Is. In abort. It Is a very good place In which to play. And it la a great deal more. It la an effort on the part of a lumber company to give its employes and their families a place to play. A score of years ago such an Idea would have been laughed out ol a lumber camp. Today the big camps make recreation a feature but the Pelican club Is conducted along somewhat new basic lines. Its de velopment are being watched with great Interest by other concerns. But to start at the beginning: The bead of the Pelican Bay com- V pany has always been interested In athletic.. Back In 1914 when the Pelican baseball team was getting mercilessly walloped. Edward H Pike and Peter A. Albertson wrote to Mortenson In San Franctsco that they couldn't play ball without uni forms. Pike and Albertson played on the team. It might be mentioned. Mortenson sent np uniforms. The next game, in fresh, resplendent nnlforme, the Pelican team score stood still while it would hare taken an adding machine to bare arrived at the other team's totals. It was out of that team and the Interest In It by the entire establish ment from yardmen to president that the community club developed. Two years ago the company, bar ing plenty of lumber, erected a com' modlons wooden building. It bouses about everything from a gymnasium to barber shop that could be found In any well-appointed club. Bowling alleys and a ride range are now be ing Installed. Just so there Is no doubt about "everything" meaning something let' recite locker rooms and show er bsths, boxing glove and punch ing bag, basketball and handball courts, pool tables, library, soda fountain, women's club room, sta tionery, secretary and janitor. Also there are educational features. Gosh! TJnder direction of W. L. Jackson come of the boys are studying algebra, geometry, "trig," and calculus. But here's where the plan Is unique. The company provides the building and pays the salaries. The employes furnish the equipment and manage the works through elev en standing committees and an ex ecutive committee. The chairmen of the committees are elected semi-annually, and the chairmen select their own commit tees. There Is a monthly meeting of the entire membership, and also a monthly meeting of the chairmen. It might be mentioned Just hers that while there Is plenty of committee activity, that Fred Brooks, secretary-manager, does quite a bit of work. - An employes makes application for membership. He pays so cents a monin. And he ceases to be a member when be leave the employ of the company. There are adult members, men and women, and Junior members. The youngsters of the neigrborhood even (hough their parents may aooto be Pelican Bay employes, are club niembcrs I. the club a success? The tact that clcse w 100 Pr cent of the residents of Pelican City, who are, employees, are members, speaks for j itself. Many who live In Klamath j Falls and commute to their work; use the club. It Is not a company club making for loyalty and kindred purposes. It Is a place to play to get something more for Pelican City folks out of life than the "everyday grind of earning a livelihood."
