Carl Magee. fiery editor of the State
Tribune, came to an end Monday
when the etate supreme court up
held the Talidtty of the pardon Is-
. aned to him In 1814 by the governor
of the atate.

charge of contempt of court by
' Judge D. J. Leahy of Las Vegas.
. following a long, bitter political
- strangle In which the editor led the
attack against the Judge in his cam'
i paign (or re-election. The contempt
; case grew out of editorials written
. by Magee as well as speeches deliv
ered in Leahy's courtroom.
The sentence on the three charges
was ninety days In Jail. Governor
Hinkle immediately pardoned the
editor, but the pardon was Ignored
by the sheriff of San Miguel coun
. ty. who contended that the governor
had no authority in the case. Ma
gee lay In Jail three days before fin
ally getting the case into the state
aupreme court on habeas corpus pro
ceedings. He has been under bond
since.
