Probl B lira, tum What the Indians Want Too Much Is Plenty; Let Them Have It roung mat m,m Ifsat awl of i,tJ met m btfort. r or out ( ,Uc, It is quite all right for our noble Indians to get an advance of several thousands of dollars each on their timber sales. But what of the several very lean years that must elapse be tween the time many of them will have squan dered the lump sum and the time the next in stallments will have become due? The Indians say they want their money to get into the stock business. They also say they are ready for a final settlement with the government. A delegation is to be sent to Washington for immediate cash and final set tlement. Grave doubts must persist as to the wisdom of any of these overtures. Many of the Indians express these doubts. There, is no doubt that throwing open the . reservation will benefit Klamath Falls. There is no doubt that a $5,000,000 cash advance to the Indians would help Klamath Falls. But is a purely mercenary consideration to govern the solution of such a vital problem, to . the Indians? The reservation lands do, however, belong to the Indians. Perhaps it would be just as well to give them what they want. Throwing them on their own resources might, after all, prove their salvation here, or hereafter. Klamath Can Help Congress Has Real Talent to Toss Into Reclamation Muddle "Reclamation farmers as a class are not repudiators. That is not, the spirit of the West. But their -hopes have not been real ized." says the annual report of Dr. Hubert Work, secretary of the interior. In a spirit of frankness Dr. Work lays the entire reclamation problem on the boards in order that Congress may determine "an equit able and economically sound policy which will remedy existing evils and make impossible a recurrence of conditions which have demoral ized the Federal Reclamation Service." "All water users are not settlers struggling to pay for a farm, some are speculators," the report continues. Klamath water users know something of this. The speculators struggle not to pay their taxes, saddling them on the legitimate farmers. And with a slickness that makes the farmers like it, and pay for it. And the logical course out of Klamath's participancy in the general reclamation mes3 is, of course, for the farmers to send Messrs. Bradbury or Thomas to Washington right away quick. To play a real joke on Con gress, Charles Wood Eberlein, volunteer spir itual advisor to the district board, should be sent along as a guiding light. o Growing of sugar beets is stressed in the annual report of C. A. Henderson, county agent. The great Klamath country is to hear much more about this important industry. fcS " Sunny Dick Says He falls on them! The medicos are not bo slow. Dinner Stories I'd like to know the name of the mean, low-down cuss In the pool parlor yesterday who made that crack about our Indiana. He heard somebody say that the poor red men who are starving on their 160 acres each on the reservation want a 15.000,000 loan from the government at once against the $17,000,000 In reservation timber sales contracts which are signed up. The redskins say they want the gold to Improve their land and buy stock. This low-brow yelled, "Yes, they'll buy stock all right In a brewery." Oranges, apples, automobile and whatnot are cheapest and most plentiful where they grow or are made. It has mora Importance than Is readied generally. Losses on circulation accounts are not huge, and do nut seriously affect the Incomes of the newspapers. The loss la vsry apt to be more serious to the Individual. e Losses on circulation vary from one to ten per cent as s usual thing, depending on the character of the community and ths systems of distribution and collection. Pome newspapers, struggling for circulation, would rather take a loss on circulation than not have It. Those newspapers which have reached the point ot saturation at which uo higher rate ran he had for advertising commence to Invoke a weeding out process.
