Press Changes Time
Radio New Factor Facing Newspapers
Once again has the trend of modern news
paper publishing toward the morning field
been shown. The Central Oregon Press, es
tablished for ten years, has changed over from
the P. M, to the A. M., hours of going to press.
Public desire and sentiment was studied
carefully by the Bend publishers and found to
coincide with their own beliefs that a morning
paper could best serve the public, it is ex- ,
plained in the Press announcement.
There has long been indisputable logic in
favor of the morning paper. Advertisers are
well acquainted with the facts. It is the
housewife that does the buying, and she can
plan her shopping to best advantage after she
has read the morning paper.
But in recent years an entirely new factor
has further weakened the position of the after
noon publication. That is radio. A great
majority of former readers of evening papers
are now radio fans. While this fact has been
:well established by publishers, it has been
little heralded for obvious reasons. . Publish
ers of American magazines were the first to
note a decline of circulation with the advent
of broadcasting, and made an exTiaustivenV:
quiry before attributing the cause to radio .
competition. ' '
The Bend Press publishers are to be con
gratulated for their acumen. The change de
notes good business judgment as well as a de
sire to better serve the public.
"Get the
Courts Doing Too
A remarkable array of facts having to do
with the bootlegging activities of Oregon, and
of the great Klamath country in particular, i3
shown in the state tabulation by counties of
crime statistics for the month of October.
Klamath county justices batted 1.000 in
the matter of convictions. Twenty-five per
sons charged with violations came before
them, and twenty-five were convicted. And
but twenty-five arrests were made during the
month. Fines collected in Klamath totaled
$3,077, all of which were assessed against the
moonshine merchants. This sum was more
by a few dollars than was collected in Mult
nomah county, which houses Portland.
The report shows that there were several
counties from which no arrests for violations
were reported. Most good people, and the
bootleggers as well, it is imagined, might well
wish that Klamath was one of the several
counties. This from widely diverged reasons,
of course.
Justice Ed Kendall is largely responsible
for the convictions and fines in Klamath coun
ty. It is not to be wondered that a certain ele
ment would like to see him deposed.

The other day w were taken to
taak by the friend of man who
got himself pinch, while drunk,
and about whom thore appeared
an Item In this newspaper. Now,
the funny thing about this rate
chining, you will agree, la that our
rateihlslui friend was not augry
at us for having published the
lory about bis friend. He thought
there was no Justice In the world
bersune we had failed In publish
the story of the arrest of auother

It's a funny world. Wuuldn't
you nulurally think, unless the
second drank happened to be in
enemy, that he would be glad that
the newspapers overlooked the
story? Most people would be
glad. It Is believed. Knowing how
friend had suffered because the
world was told that he hadn't any
tetter sense than to get himself
arrested would make most folk
charitable.
It might easily be assumed that
lu both rases the public was en
titled to the Information. Assume
the second case was a flagrant
vlulniion of the law and involved
driving an automobile while In
toxicated. And the first rase was
simple drunk and disorderly. In
such an event II may be presumed
the friend of the first drunk had
a right to r,ry out that the news
papers had been guilty of a rank
Injustice.

This entire consideration seems
to he much ado about nothing,
mil the reasoning of the friend
of the drunk Is Interesting. So It
may he better understood, let It
be written that the witnessed the
disorderly conduct of the second
drunk. Thai was an exciting
