Abraham Lincoln. Power and. the Fool The Sam; Yesterday. Today and- 'Fiftecn or twenty years ago a man who thought he was "daring," got drunk, then took an automobile filled with other htiman beings and started out cn what ha3 been popularly termed a "joy ride." That man thought he was daring, or fig ured himself as a reckless dare-devil, fearless, afraid of nothing. So he thought. Shortly after he started out on his "joy ride" his mental processes of reasoning, un balanced by the "Dutch courage" of liquor, he failed to note the end of a flat car protrud ing out into the highway on a railway crossing. The automobile struck the edge of the flat car. Death, excruciating pain, mangled hu manity, domestic complications resulted all because of the unbalanced reasoning of one individual. . Before a stern judge, angered that a man could be so forgetful of others as to take, by blind foolishness, that which he could not give back, the driver of that auto huddled in naked fear, presenting anything but the appearance of a dare-devil, recklessness and manhood and . anything else all gone. His sane reasoning thad returned, and with it he listened to these words: ' -...-- "An automobile is a powerful engine of destruction when improperly handled." Not one in 50,000 of these highway speed ers would last one minute if given an oppor tunity on a track with a really high-powered car, drunk or sober. And for a display of cheap acting they will risk another's life, maim still others and so on. It was the. same yesterday, perhaps today, and Much Ado About Nothing Something Is Wrong With Something I If He Doesn't Have Great Thanksgiving It Won't Be their Fault Within the past month all we have heard as regards criticism of the air and naval forces of the country is that something is wrong with the "other fellow." The latest comes from a mimic war some where in the vicinity of the Hawaiian islands. History has proven that an anti-aircraft gun gets about one in a million aircraft and that is, perhaps, only chance. Anti-aircraft guns had been used effective ly as a barrage, to turn aircraft, but in the past war it ha3 been more chance than anything when an aircraft gun has brought' down an aeroplane. Somebody is right. It would appear that if careful cognizance were taken of well meaning men's opinions, instead of expensive attempts to defend one's jobs, official pride, and what not, were to guide the contending parlies, much more bene fit would be derived by the people who pay the bills if an actual war were to transpire. r J j . t "SammHs" mat una, suave- ' , , , i Sunny Dick Says A strange, erratic comet ., Is (djscqvered afa,r. ; Tt said It's Colonel Mitchell's Guiding star. For a lime they fatten. Khori'v their publishing property takes a downward trend In value. It la at this time they grow fero cious They try to ne the. edi torial bludgeon. This partakes the ualure of a threat, the weapon of an arrant coward. It la a con temptible practice. Happily, In his day and wge there Is llltle of it i e e T' ere la a simple reason why a publisher cannot successfully foot people- he has facta with whlrh to reckon. The street fuklr sella a worthless uftli le fur your quar ter, regardless Its worth It la a concrete something. You buy It. you find you have been stung, and buy no more. The publisher who fools you has something ab stract to peddle, usually In the negative. e e In other words, what he ped dles la untruths, distorted half truths, wordy nothings. Ills one sinister purpose la to lead bla roade-t away from fart. The real facta have a way of arising to the aurf..ce. Ink or Inquisitions can not keep them down. The people can be fooled fur a time only by any publisher. Ills methods cannot change. The only thine he can change Is ownership. Ho must peddle the same old stuff, tioon he Is forced tn null and move to other fields. e e e It Is the nature of some people to strive for gain by use of un holy methods of graft in city, state and nation. Nome politician- are In thla class. They, too, thrive on fooling people for a lime. The unscrupulous publish er and the crooked politician are usually bed-fellows.
