Hughes in New York has been made th basis for political speculation which sets up this distinguished republican as a possible rival of President Coolldge for the next nomination. The specu lation may be dismissed as the pro duct of th dull sesson here. It has been cropping out Intermittent ly since Hughes quit tho cabinet In March. ' If the republican party stood in need ot a first class presidential candidate it might turn to th re cent secretary of state. But un fortunately for Hughes there are no openings at present and the best the parly can do for him is to take his name and address and get in touch with him if anything should turn up. Republican senators snd congress men beginning to trickle for the session of congress regard the hold of President Coolldge on the coun try as remarkable. Senator Moses of New Hampshire has been In half ot the states during the last fow months and finds party leaders united in their support of Coolldge. He and other republican politicians detect no important drift away from Coolldge, either among professional politicians or among ..the voters generally who snpported him at the election a year ago.
