"Crime" of Criticism Military politics is a -phrase sometimes used to describe methods which high com mands of the army and navy resort to in fur ' thering propaganda along lines which are pe culiarly suitable to themselves, or these whose vocations follow along the same lines as their own. Not infrequently is this same phrase applied to the social atmosphere of those same circles. Col. Mitchell, stormy petrel of the air ser vice, undoubtedly upset in an unprecedented manner the conceptions of the high command as lo what they may term "proper respect" for traditions of the major military defense forces of the country. Hence those whose military fate has as sociated them with the battleships resent Col. Mitchell's assertions that airplanes would make short work of these leviathan defend ers of our country upon the high seas. The higier navy officers, in plain words, see their jobs going by the board. They see a long par ade of future line officers with no big battle ships to take care of thousands of them. And the question they perhaps ask themselves is: "What are we going to do for jobsif they take away our battleships?" " The army says there must be no separate air department of the land forces. We must rule. In this they are right, but only right on the general scheme of things. Let the air service be subordinate to the supreme military command of the country, but a "high" com- mand of the air service responsible for effic iency of air equipment and personnel, appears pertinent. This is really what Mitchell wants. But he has seen fit to voice criticism of the "sys tem," to suggest that the unwritten law of the navy, "we never make mistakes," i3 a fallacy. Hence military politics has declared war on Mitchell and will war against him for the rest of his career. Likewise any and all who may wish to take up cudgels in Mitchell's behalf. That insubordination is incompatible with dis cipline is unquestionable, but in passing we would suggest a revision of the old adage to read: "Let the crime denote the punishment." In telegraphic dispatches of recent date there appeared a news story to the effect that law enforcement officers and members of the church locked horns over the conviction of a petty thief. It was the case of a man stealing food for his wife and children, and merited action of the church folk, if all facts as report ed were true. The incident was merely another of life's problems wherein the helping hand of benev olent philanthropy came too late. Probably some one had a chance to give the man a job before he wa3 reduced to stealing. ,A Lfc'aA ft-V&k 6JUDER 'Vi i '4' A-v' 'Sfs Above is nhown iin-hitoct'ii ilrnwinj; of th I-pi.rnnl ciuirih ..which U to lc erected In KUJ within tHo near future. 1 u Itrv J Henry Thomas if Trans- ! ronj. tt".r Wlnneper;, Catiadj. ar j " riirl in Klmiath Kails ve.terday ' in B.-:-rpt ih parish of i,.
