PU:i cf R ! JX'-lopm:Ht Mast Favorable tj Agriculture. We know now what the Northern lir.es would like to do in Oregon in the way of rail road development. Their objective, as shown by the testimony of their officers and friends at the interstate commerce commission hear ing in Portland, is the handling of a large share cf the lumber manufactured from two great holdings which are now ripe for axe and saw. The holders of these great tracts want the Northern lines to get this share BUT WILL CUT AND MARKET THE LUMBER ANYWAY. For the development of agriculture, upon which much of the future prosperity of this part of Oregon depends, the Northern lines' program is not as good not nearly as advan tageous as that of the Southern Pacific. All we would really gain would be a com peting line. Under the present sjstem of federal reg ulation, competition has lost much of its old meaning. Rates must necessarily be govern ed by the cost of the service. Additional lines would mean additional cost of doincr hii'nc f So the prospect of more lines meaning lower rates wcu:d be very remote. Then there's the matter of service. Some of the witnesses be :cr? t.e commission expressed the opinion -.at competition would insure better service. Standards of service, like rates, are fixed by the interstate commerce commission, which has the power also to see they are maintained on a scale to meet the needs of the community served. The Southern Pacific plan in all its details is now being presented for the information of the commission and the public. Southern Pacific officers will be required to maintain then- claim that they should be allowed to keep this railroad development in their own ! hands, in the face of severe cross-examination, j When this second phase of the big hear- j ing has been concluded we will K iZ , ! sition to judge, having all the facts before us, which program will be better for Klamath rails and Klamath county. In the plan of the Oregon public service commission, the third phase in the hearing which calls for the construction of the Crane Odell line, and which would very largely iso late us, Klamath Falls is not interested, except to see that the interstate commerce commis sion sets it aside.' ii' Dinner Stories An Irishman o-.it of e:r.;i:- ar applied at some works for a p.i To get totthe office, he wa taV:ri up by the elevator, which !..'t hirj si the floor on which the office was situated, and then it aj.-en led further.
