"Let u have faith that right make might, and in that faith let u to the end dare to do our duty at we understand it." Abraham Lincoln. Klamath's Opportunity Is Now! Issues Before the People on Railroad Question Should Not Be Clouded The Klamath country has an opportun ity that comes but once in a lifetime. It has that opportunity right now and right now is the time it must act. The Southern Pacific and the Oregon Trunk railroad companies have placed their plans before this community and a plain choice must be made between them. The Oregon Trunk plans to run a branch line construction south from Bend to Klam ath Falls, paralleling the Southern Pacific company's Natron Cut-off and the O. C. & E. and two of the latter's extensions which the Southern Pacific is to finance. The North ern lines have announced they do not intend to go beyond Klamath Falls and that tbey in tend to establish only small shops here. Their line would serve a considerable amount of timber between here and Bend, the major part of which wculd move to Bend for man facture since it is absurd to think that the Oregon Trunk would make a double haul of bringing the logs into Klamath Falls for' mill ing and hauling the lumber back north again. That is one plan. The ether plain choice is the Southern Pacific's program. The Southern Pacific has officially an nounced it proposes to BUILD A LINE SOUTH FROM KLAMATH FALLS THROUGH TULE LAKE REGION CON NECTING WITH THE BROADGAUGED N. C O. AND PROVIDING THEREBY A NEW DIRECT ROUTE TO, THE EAST AND ALL OF THE PRINCIPAL MAR KETS OF THE UNITED STATES which would take any of Klamath county's pro ducts, whether of farms or of forest, at least 200 miles shorter than the Oregon Trunk line via Bend. This line would carry 90-pound rail, rock ballast, and be as good a railroad as exists anywhere. Furthermore, THE SOUTHERN PAC IFIC COMPANY PROPOSALS TO TAKE OVER THE STRAHORN LINE AND EX TEND IT SO THAT ALL THE LUMBER ING ACTIVITIES OF THE ENTIRE KLAM ATH BASIN WOULD CENTER AT KLAMATH FALLS. The Strahorn line and extensions wculd be as good a railroad as the Oregon Trunk branch from Bend. THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC COMPANY HAS STILL FURTHER ANNOUNCED THAT IT PROPOSED TO LOCATE ITS TERMI NAL HERE, BRINGING AN INCREASED PAYROLL TO KLAMATH FALLS OF $1,200,000 PER YEAR. Without any thought or threat at mak ing Klamath Falls a mere whistling post," THE. SOUTHERN PACIFIC HAS AN NOUNCED THAT AS A BUSINESS PRO POSITION IT CANNOT AFFORD TO CARRY INTO EFFECT ITS GREAT t-t rLAiMo, CENTERING AT KLAMATH I FA! I G ItT Tur n a it a -t--. . . THE KLAMATH COUNTRY IS DIVIDED WITH ANOTHER RAILROAD. The South ern Pacific executives have been very ex plicit on this point and there is no doubt they mean absolutely what they say. The loose talk about the coming of the Oregon Trunk forcing the Southern Pacific to build is stuff and nonsense. THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC'S PRO GRAM CALLS FOR AN EXPENDITURE OF $38,000,000 compared with $7,000,000 FOR THE OREGON TRUNK BRANCH LINE FROM BEND. THE WHOLE SOUTHERN PACIFIC PLAN HAS KLAMATH FALLS AS ITS BASIS. The Oregon Trunk plan is based on Bend, tending to pull the business that way and to give Bend the benefit of construction expenditures. The Southern Pacific is here on the ground ready to build while the Oregon Trunk is 175 miles away. Consider that. , The Southern Pacific is fighting for its program against the opposition of the Oregon Trunk, the. Public Service Commission of Oregon, the Coos Bay district, including Marshfield and North Bend, and possibly Lakeview. The Oregon Public Service Com mission, speaking officially for. the state, is rallying strong support for its plan for the Crane-Odell shortcut to the East which would leave Klamath Falls 100 miles to the south. Disregarding all petty issues or criticism of the Southern Pacific Company, here is one big issue where the interests of Klamath coun ty and the Southern Pacific are identical. This community should support the Southern Pacific program, and we believe that this com munity as a matter of self interest will sup port the Southern Pacific program. The lumber interests are practically 1 00 per cent for it, the great body of the farmers who are just as much concerned to get a short line to the East, are also strongly for 1 it. AND KLAMATH FALLS CANNOT AFFORD TO IGNORE THE LUMBERMEN AND THE FARMERS WHOSE TRADE HAS BUILT THE CITY OF KLAMATH FALLS And made possible a livelihood FOR ALL OF US. A substantial MAJOR ITY OF THE BUSINESS INTERESTS also are outright for the Southern Pacific plan. We have but a few days in which io speak our mind. Let us speak it clearly so that we may get the needed railroad lines built here, avoiding possibilities of years of delay.
