Window Drapings :: By Annette Bradshaw 1 Vacationing Means Roughing It Tourists Should be Pioneers and Philosophers To hear some vacationists talk about the discomforts of their travels, you would not think that it did them much good to get away from home. If in some hotel or restaurant they find the meat slightly tough or the pie imperfectly cooked, they talk for days about the poor service at that place, and warn their friends not to go there. The end of it is apt to be that they are not satisfied unless they patronize the most expensive resorts, which may make their vacation too costly. . tf? A different type of people set out on a vacation with a little more of the spirit of aCventure, as on a kind of pioneering trip. If they have some vicissitudes of food or beds, they look at it as a part of the fun, and cheerfully put up with any discomforts' in view of the glorious time they are having. ' ' I It takes a certain amount of philisophy to enjoy a vacation. Some travelers are constantly . worrying for fear their trains will be late, or they can not drive their automobiles fast enough. So they miss all the enjoyment of the pretty country, while they fret every time the train stops five minutes, or they push their cars so fast as to create an accident peril. The true vacation philisopher should start on his trip with the expectation that as soon as he gets away from home, his experiences are going to be more or less varied and irregular, and such as can not be predicted in advance. Where one is fortunAte enough to have full length windows in the living room, the fermal arrangement at the left of the illustration is one which can be followed in any number of combinations. In this instance, the glai4 curtains were of heavy square mesh net in ecru. Made per fectly straight with a ruffle of the net, and gracefully looped back, they are almost sufficient dressing of themselves. The overdrapei seem to make a window more cheerful. These drapes are of mulberry 'silk rep. This material drapes wonderful'; well, ind doesn't need a lining.- The gracefully draped valance is edged with raltail fringe of the same col or, about three inches wide. To the upper right ia a most adorable suggestion for the bedroom. The glass curtains in this in stance are of plain white piar qjisette. The ovcrdrapes are of Scotch madras with a col ored dot. The triple efTccl is obtained by a two-inch tuck, which gives the effect of three tiny curtains. The new double ruffle valance Is an other charming touch. For the hall or dining room where one has casement win dows, nothing could be more charming than the white net lllass curtains in the lower right with their cvrdrape uf brilliant chintz, with h black border. This makes the win dow the most prominent fea ture of the room. The hlurk wool tassels at intervals on the valance are unusual. Maintenance of stability in the lumber trade requires that seasonal fluctuations in the use of lumber for build ing and other purposes be eliminated so far as possible, in order, throughout the year, to equalize the lumber movement, and hence the demand upon the sawmills for rush shipments. One of the most important aids which the lumber industry can give to its own stability and profit during the next several years will be the develop ment of a demand and a buying policy among the rail roads and industrial buyers and in foreign markets, which will supplement the period of relatively low do mestic demand for lumber for building purposes. This can be done if undertaken as a fundamental trade pro motion movement in the lumber trade. Unless this is done with some measure of success, either the sawmills, as a whole, will in ordinary years have to hold in mill stocks a substantial portion of current production during the low months, or materially reduce the average output; or else force a large volume of lumber upon a reluctant market which in turn means the substitution of specula tion for stability, and irregularity in operation and em ployment Wilson Compton, manager National Lumber Manufacturers'.association. BLAME THEIR PARENTS There appears to he a belief t!iat sons of ministers labor under a handicap and 'ore more inclined than other boys turn out badly when they re.u-h manhood. Fred C. Kjlly, .In his very in teresting Utile book. '.'The Fun of Knocking Folks,"' tells that a few year ago out of' about ls.titui names selected at sandotn from "Who's Who in America," it was found that the fathers of nearly 1,000 had been clergymen. "No other single profession can show so high a batting average. "In "An English Dictionary of National Biography,' the names of ministers' sons appear 1,270 times while the ' sons of lawyers are there only to the number of 10, and the sons of doctors total only 350. English-speaking men of let ters are prepumleranfly sons of clergymen." , . i . ' ' There are a number oi pluusi ble explanations for all this. The home atmosphere Is one of good conversation and clean lan guage; In brief, culture from the cradle. Then, there Is the fact that tho average minister works at home a good'deal of the tlnfe and is able to keep an eye on the, habits and behavior of his sons. He Is especially Insistent on good deportment, partly because he knows that his' hoy will ho more open to criticism Hiss other youths. ' - In studying ihe lives of great men it Is evident that If one grows up In a reasonably cultural nt moKphcra, the chances for success are Just that much Improved. Scientific students of human ho ings now attribute less power to hereditary influence and mora power to early environment. Dr. William A.
