QFF1C!ALPAPER OF THE CITY OF KLAMATH FALLS "Let us have Jaith that right makes might, and in that faith let us to the end dare to do our duty as we understand it" Abraham Lincoln ' CARELESSNESS WITH FIRE INEXCUSABLE The fire demon is taking an increasing toll every year in this county, on account of careless folks. in the mountains. They ride in comfortable automobiles, throw smoking stubs of cigars and cigarettes into the brush and leave live coals in their camp-fires. Such habits are dangerous even in the city, where there are paved streets, tiled floors and electric stoves; but they are fatal to the future of cur forests. Fires swept over thousands of acres of timber land last summer and fall. The time of year is ap proaching again whe nsuch fires may be expected. Every citizen who goes into the mountains should have impressed upon his mind in some manner the tremendous fire responsibilities that rest upon him along the roads, trails, dnd in the camps. DO WE WISH TAX EQUALITY? Our theory of government is based upon the principle of equal taxation. There is a constitu tional desire to treat all men alike in the matter of their financial relationship to the government civic or national. But the government and all its political subdivisions keep issuing a regular flood of tax-exempt securities for public undertak ings of all kinds, thereby furnishing a loophole for thousands of persons to escape all taxation. This is a wheel within a wheel that is working back ward. If there were not so many tax-exempt se curities, there would not be so much extravagance. If we are sincere in our demand for tax reduc tion and tax equality, why do we not change our tax-exemption laws which permit such unfair dis tribution of the tax burden? DOES ADVERTISING PAY? (From Kansas City Club News.) Advertising has made the Victrola Dog fam ous. It has put Castoria down your throat, left bristles in your gums, and then came along with a Kubberset and took them out. It has put Sozodont, Pebeco and Pepsodent on your teeth. It has put a Gillette against your hayfeild. It has put Arrow collars around your neck and Ingersolls around your wrist. It has jammed your feet in Holeproof sox, put Pan's gaiters on your legs and Tiffany rings on your fingers. It has worn out your jaws on Wrigley's and posted you on what to buy to cure corns, warts and bunions and ingrowing toenails. Go anywhere you want to, do anything you wish, and advertising has had a hand in it absolutely. And then some people ask, "Does advertisine pay?" 1 DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'D DO.lFYOu' DIDN'T HAVE ME TO, FIX Voo'upONCE y " A VEAR ! ; k wkM? Mil" ' Mil nl au.ry I. t,., ,i u U-i-ut.
