TO LOSE OUT WHEN WEED BUNCHES ,v HITS; ARNOLD PROVES SENSATION Costly Error By Bayness Costs Game; Mohler Pitches 4" Great Game; Pelicans To Protest From 8th Inning Be ,1 . cause Of Oeschger's Spitball Back on the homo grounds after an absence of two weeks, confident of Tictory and with at least 1S00 ens to spur them on the Pelicans dropped another heartbreaker after -' 11 Innings of wonderful ball. The Weeds lived up to their reputation '. . of winning a ball game, regard , less of the tactics. Oeschger, their hurler, pitched tine ball, especlal--!y when he used the spltter, which Is prohibited In this league. The - .game will be protested to the league directcTS, and the Pelicans hare a protest coming If the opinion of a majority of the players and tans is to be considered. The game was aa sensational as has ever been seen here. A ninth 'inning rally which tied the score 'and eventually forced the game Into ' .an 11 frame affair was a hair i ralserj A costly error by Bayness in the "second Inning Is what really lost ' I'the.'game. The Weeds took the vic $ J-ory in that Inning without having "-secured an earned run. It was like this'. ' Painter, the first man up was hit by 'one of Mohler's pitched balls. Stb'bener filed out to Watts. Noe laid an easy Toller down to third base, which should have gone ouCbut Bayness let It get away ' from him and it rolled to the out- field WIon, running for Painter 'sccred on the error. The speedy ' '' No tore around the bags from j first to: third before the ball reach j i lnfiald. The . attempt to , nail i' Noe' at third from the outfield was' wild and Noe dashed In tor the "iecond' tally. The Weeds 'had said their - little place for nine long, scoreless Innings, but that little ... t run piece was what won the ball game. The Pelicans didnt solve Oesch ' gw Ttntlf -the fourth when Mathews got. a 2 bagger with 2 down. Noel went ont on a long, fly to left field, fa the'.. fifth the; Pelicans gave an ominous warning that they were about to get to the big Oeschger. Arnold singled with one down. He went to second oa a sacrifice by Demitt. Mohler got a pretty single and Arnold tore In with the first tally. Oeschger saw he was no match for the Pelicans without re sorting to the "spltter." And ap parently he did resort to ft The 1 Pelicans didn't have a ghost of a show until the 9th, after they had protested the game and were watch ing the big Weed hurler like a hawk ' to see that no mud or spit went ' on the ball. The ninth was a real sensation. The Pelicans pulled up in the last half a run In the rear, Mathews struck out. Noel got a 2 bagger and the stands went wild. Clark rolled an easy one down the first "bane line for the second out. It was up to the Pelican first sacker - to save the game, nad say, the big boy socked out what should have been a home run, and the winning run. When Noel crossed the plate with the tying tally the roof was jarred from the grandstand. The ball hadn't lit when Arnold reach ed first. The big boy was on second by the time the Weed fielder had run the ball down. He was on third as the ball was sailing through the air on the way to the Infield to be relayed by the shortstop. Ar nold was homeward bound from third when the coach called htm back. It was a heartbreaker. What should have, been a homer went tor 3 bases. Demitt, the next man up popped to Grant and the game was forced to extra Innings. Mohler was going strong in the tenth. The Weeds met their fate In one, two, three order, two of them- whiffing. It was In the 11th that the Weeds did the only stick work that amounted to a hill of 'heads1.'' ' Mohler was burning them 'in, but' despite the southpaw's ef- "fdrts the Weeds bunched 8 hits on him, one two-bagger and one triple. When the last half of the 11th ended the Weeds were 3 runs in the lead. The Pollcans could not rally, although they did get two safeties in that discouraging 11th. . i The Pelicans lost but they need Moe's 9th Annual Sale of Pro gress will demonstrate the great- Drop A not be ashamed of a defeat such as Sunday'a. If still unsalaried call at the News' office and a season paas will be donated. It still unsatisfied see ;n alienist. Bert Arnold was taken from the lineup two weeks ago because he failed to kick in with a hit. The big boy was the sensation of Sunday's game. He played' a fault less game at first. He took one fast hit ball out of the air that looked to be a sure hit. The boy Is all right. Furthermore It was Arnold who scored the first run after getting a safety In the Sih. Hut his real right to ;the hall of fame was earned when he tied the score In the ninth by bringing Doc Noel lu with a triple. And speaking of Doc Noel. He's earned the reputation of being one of the most reliable hitters on the team. He got a single and double Sunday, merely to keep his batting average around the 400 mark. Al Norwest went haywire Sunday. Great things were expected of the flashy shortstop. I'ntil Sunday be led the. league with the stick. He hit a terrible slump Sunday, though, fannlug three times on Oeschger's curve balls. In his flro times up he failed to get on. "Sunny" Mohler worked a little piece of humorous strategy nn his opponent, Oeschger. When "Sunny" faced Oeschger tho first time, the Weed hurler expected him to blto on; three wide balls. Then he expected Mohler to stand there and let three strikes go by, but the southpaw socked the first good one for a single.: But Mohler had his inning when Oeschger next faced him. Ho threw three balls and then let Oeschger strike in the air at three strikes. Mohlor wore a grin a mile long while Oeschger failed to see the humor. This bird Ocochgor Is no make shift as a hurler. In 11 Innings he struck out 13. Mohler pitched a mighty flno game. His only bad Inning was that costly 11th. when tho Weeds hit his fast ones tor a triple, double and single. Mnltlnr's big Innings was the sixth, whsn the top of tho Weed butting order struck out In a row. In Ihe.lltb, with a Weed run ner on 3rd and one down, Kner bunted one to Mohler. The south paw made a quirk run. scooped It up and tossed the ball to De mitt. all within a fraction of a second. Ilut. unfortunately, the Weed umpire derided Demitt failed to tag the Weed sliding Into home. He was out a font or more. If there were doubts about other decisions the cer tainly was none among the fans on this one. . Clnrk. Watts, Norwest and Pain ter made sensational stops and catches that added a big league color to the game. "Mickey" Dumltt playrd his usual heady game behind the bat. The Pelicans aro fortunate In having the little go-getter on their string. Demitt and llayness are light with, the stick, though. They are about due to come out of It. This Is a slugging league and the Pelicans have got to keep In the swim or else sink In the percentage column. Bert Conk figured tho gnmo would only go 9 Innings. He measured out a plug of tobacco for each Innings, and by the lltli waa plumb out. The game was lost. Another error of ontmlsslon for Bert. It was noised around at league meotlngs that no team rouM Im port out-of-town players. That was before the season 'opened. Grant, the slugging and fust run ning Weed first sacker, la a St. Mary's university football star. Oeschger was Imported from the pros, To Lowly Rabc Ruth Faints While Attempting Score for Yankees NKW YORK. June t. A weak and wan Dabs Ruth, who has wait ed away a rouple of carloads since the. day when he developed that na tional ache lu his stuffing, relumed to tho game today and played so hard that ho dropped In his trarks. Waller Johnson was pitching for Washington. The new Ilnbe Ruth was new business to blin when the great Invalid want up to bat for the first lima In the league season of 1925, as the Yanks first hitler of the second Inning. Johnson couldn't know wbnKier the Ilabu waa strong enough to knock a' foul tip or hoist the ball Into the next precinct. Johnson offered, a fast one, down the slut, and Ruth with a leisurely swing, returned It straight to the elderly Scandinavian, who took the ball on a bound and tossed Ruth out ay first. It was In Ilia fourth Inning that the Babe folded, up like a mall order bungalow and lay panting In the loom along the base line. iKarl Combs, one of the now boys wbo have been run Into lha Yankee line up since the oo! lapse began this spring, had led; off with a single. Ruth let tho first one go by. Ills eye was still good.. The umpire called It a -ball, its lashed at the next one and mlaeod. Tbe third and fourth, he fouled, one of the fouls sailing to tho bleachers. If It had landed a few Inches to the left, the Ilaba would ,hava bad s home run In his first game of the season. 8o Johnson prudonlly walked him. Bob Meusel, hitting behind Ruth, hit a. three bagger, and the Babe east.' Several others came up from California semi-pro, ball. The Pelicans will know better next season.
