TO STAND OFF
NAVAL FLEET

HONOLULU. April 23. Oahu,
chief island of the Hawaiian group,
and sole defense of the mainland of
America against onslaught from the
Pacific, Is ready for war.
All night Wednesday the tramp
ing of troops, the rumble of gun
caissons and the roar of catarplllar
tractors echoed through the empty
strocts of tho stooping city, and at
dawn officers announced that prep
arations had been completed for
withstanding the mighty blue fleet
which is bearing down somewhere
beyond the blue horizon line in an
effort to efface this emerald dot In
mid-l'ariflc from the military maps.
To the casual eye, Honolulu re
mains a peaceful city, unmindful of
war, and Incapable of defending It
self. For there Is no obstentatlon
about the United States military
forces here. Forts which dot the
Island are innocent appearing bar
racks dotted around a green parade
ground, with the slgna; gun, an in
nocuous piece which stands near the
flagstaff, as the only weapon visible.
Forts Ready
Diamond Head crater, connected
with Fort Ruger by tunnels, is one
of the most formidable forts In the
world, however. In Its sup-like in
terior, "which few civilians have seen,
are giant morturs for comparatively
short range work up to five or six
miles, which In theory are deadly in
their effectiveness against hostile
ships within range. Concealed In
vast chambers hollowed out of the
solid rock forming the seaward side
of the crater, are big rifles with an
effective range of twenty-five miles
nnd upward.
Forts de Russey, Weaver and
Armstrong, while less formidable,
are equipped with powerful and
modern butteries, while at Schoflcld
barracks, a city of 12,000 men,
which sits on a great plane 16 miles
from Honolulu, there Is a greater
store of motorozed guns and other
equipment thnn tho average layman
man comprehend.
Thousands of miles of communica
tion wire were strung between out
posts and chief centers of defense
Wodnesday night, while a series of
showers drenched the working
soldiers.

uses it frequently.
In a wind tunnel for testing air
planes built in France air cur
rents with a speed of 106 miles an
hour can be produced.
