One of my most unusual mis
lakes of 1963 was when 1 called
the wrong penalty. I was South,
and if yiui want to see my
problem just look at the South
hand.
I opened one no-trump and
was promptly raised to three.
Everyone passed and East led
Hie six of spades out of turn.
The game was duplicate and 4
could accept the lead, where
upon dummy would go right
down on the table; I could de
mand a lead of a spade or for
bid a lead of a spade by West
or I could simply treat that six
of spades as a penalty card.
None of these choices was
particularly appealing, but 1 fi
nally decided that .1 would ac
cept that spade lead. Perhaps
my partner would have some
thing in ttw aiit Thi r(wf dirt
not fall on me. but I surely had
made the worst possible choice.
Dummy showed up with
the queen of spades, but unfor
tunately it was a singleton.
West played his ace and re
turned the suit and spades were
established against me.
Of course, 1 did have 10 top
triaks and proceeded to run
them off, but had 4 barred the
spade lead I would surely have
made at least one trick more
than 1 did gather and in dup
licate those extra tricks are
right important.

takes I want to point out that
my partner's raise to three no
trump was the correct bid with
his hand. We were playing du
plicate and there was no reason
jor him to suggest a diamond
game. ; J
