Hayes, formerly on duty at the Canyon District of Yellow stone National Park, and Gar rett A. Smathers. recently of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, according to a report from the national park head quarters. Hayes entered duty as chief ranger on Dec. 8 and Smath ers filled the post o chief park naturalist three days lat er. Hayes has been with the Na tional Park Service since 1M8, having been stationed previous ly at Grand Teton National Park and at Yellowstone. Ac companying Hayes to the Lava Beds were his wife, Rosalio, and daughters, Connie, 8, and Kathleen, 5. The Hayes' are natives of Wyoming. Other than his experience at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Smathers served at the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virgi nia. His park service career started in 1937. Natives of North Carolina, he and his wife, Patricia, have a 16-month-old son, Eric. Dnventora u Higher Fee Approved For Nurses Hildegard Watkins, president of District No. 8, Oregon Nurs es Association, has been ad vised of approval of an in creased per hour fee for pri vate duty nurses. James B. Hall, president of the Oregon Nurses Association, has announced that the asso ciation has approved a fee of S2.66 per hour for an 8-hour shift for private duty nurses, effective Jan. I, 1964. "Most of us know how much it means to be able to depend on a competent private duty nurse when there is serious illness in the family," said Hall, "but the number of pri vate duty nurses in Oregon is steadily declining. Unless their income is made more attrac tive, they will continue to move into other fields of nursing that offer better financial induce ments." Hall stated that there were 563 private duty nurses in Ore gon in 1960, but the number had decreased to 404 in J963. He commented further that the short supply of registered nurs es in many hospitals places ad ditional emphasis on the skills of private duty nurses. 1 The adjustment in fees, the first since Dec. 1, 1961, was based on the increased cost of living as well as the increase in rates for other self-employed individuals who have similar preparation and re sponsibility. In common with other self - employed persons, private duty nurses hear the lull cost of social security cov e r a g e. vacations and sick leave. In addition, the private duty nurse has no guarantee of regular employment. SP Action Protested SALEM UPI Oregon's pub lic utility commissioner today was urged to enter objections before the Interstate Commerce : Commission to Southern Pacific Company's proposed elimination of Shasta daylight train serv ice during the winter months. Sen. Edward Kadcley, D-Eu-gene, urged commissioner Joncl C. Hill to act "on behalf of tho Oregon citizens to be affected by this arbitrary cutting of pas scnger service."
