Make Your Own
Christmas Gifts
By PEGGIE SETZLER
County Extension Agent
Doing things yourself is much
more exciting than watching
others or merely admiring their
work. Why not plan our gifts
for this Christmas to encour
age each person to get in the
swing and "do" something.
If your friends or relatives en
joy music, they would get a
world of pleasure from a small
instrument with which to play
along with friends. Those who
like to sing would especially en
joy a ukelele, guitar, or auto
harp. For accompaniment to
singing or fun musical ensem
bles, many enjoy playing flute
ophones, harmonicas and other
inexpensive instruments.
Sports-minded people would
appreciate equipment for tlieir
sport or perhaps, as in bow ling,
a series of prepaid opportuni
ties to indulge in their special
interest. Those who enjoy crafts
are always easy to get presents
for because materials or tools
for the craft are appreciated.
Homemade game boards are
fan for tlie giver to make and
furnish endless hours of enjoy
ment for young and old. Then,
too, if you have friends who en
joy card games a card shuffler
may be a real boon. This keeps
the cards in better condition
as well as furnishes needed as
sistance to those hose hands
cannot manipulate one or sever
al decks.
Even toys for children can
be checked to sec whether they
provide opportunity for the child
Fruit Cake
How TOs
For even more fruit flavor,
use grape, pineapple or orange
juice as a substitute for the wa
ter in the mix recipe.
Before you start mixing, pick
out several pieces of red and
green candied cherries suvo
them to decorate the baked
fruit cake.
Warm corn syrup, brushed
over the lop of the fruit cake,
right after baking, makes a
quick and easy glaze. It w i 1 1
help hold candied fruit garnish
in place, too. '
To store fruit cake, wrap
tightly in aluminum foil and
refrigerate.
Fruit cake slices easier when
it's cold let slices warm to
room temperature before scrv
ing. New England Fruit Cake Mix
may be baked in an 8x4-inch loaf
pan, a tfx5-inch loaf pan, or
two Mb. coffee cans.
Gift-wrap fruit cakes quickly
and easily in colorful foil or
self-sealing plastic film add a
bow or sprig of holly for a fes
tive touch.
For a delicious holiday dessert,
wrap slices of fruit cake in foil
and heat at 325 degrees for 20
to 30 minutes. Serve topped with
your favorite lemon sauce, and
whipped cream.
A real New England touch Is
hard sauce to top your fruit
cake. The topping can be chilled
in rolls and sliced, or chilled in
individual shapes. It's quick
and easy to make with a pack
ago of Pillsbury One Layer Size
Creamy Vanilla Frosting M i x.
Beat mix with li cup soft but
ter until smooth and creamy.
Add one egg and one teaspoon
rum flavoring: beat until light
and fluffy. Chill.
IllllOtiE CLUB DISH
Your most creative dish might
well be Chicken Avocado Imper
ial. Tlie combination is simply a
can or jar of boned chicken cut
into pieces and combined with
medium wliite sauce, a dash of
cayenne and 2 or 3 tablespoons
chopped chutney. Spoon this
mixture into the cavity of lengtli
wise halves of peeled avocados;
top with flaked coconut. (Place
m a shallow pan with small
amount of water. Pake in mod
erate oven about 20 minutes to
lieat and brown coconut. You'll
want to rate this among your
specialty dislies. Another time
try it with canned boned turkey.
to "do" something other than
wind it up and watch. And dim't
forget that imagination is one
of the big areas in which a
child can grow by doing. Toys
so realistic as to leave nothing
to the imagination can stifle
creative impulses.
