Pelicans Prepare For Visit Of lend Lava iears PACE (B Thursday, wnmw is, 1963 HERALD AND NEWS, KUraath Fallsv 0r. "A" was the first letter in the first known alphabet which dates from about 1850 B.C. That surprising band of Bend Lava Bears arrives in Klam ath Falls Friday night. ' And the Pelicans, otill smart ing from a 55-50 edging suffered at Bend last Friday night, have keyed their practice sessions this week to make amends for . that losing effort. -" It's been a determined band ,of Pels working on all phases . fully confident that the loss to ' the Lava Bears last week could ; be attributed to simply an "off" night. : And the statistics of the game - lend this opinion credence: Bend shooting a low .201 from the field. The Pels controlling the boards by a margin of 43-20. The Lava Bears winning the contest at the charity stripe as they hit 21 of 31 attempts while the Pels were converting only eight of 19. The Pels hitting fur 21 field goals to just 17 for Bend. Also, the Pelicans throwing the ball away and losing the ball on other miscues a total of 27 times. The latter item plus the num ber of attempts afforded the Lava Bears at the gift stripe and an off night in the field work by the Pels were the key hems leading to the decat. Obviously drills this week have been designed to elimi nate the numerous costly mis takes and increase the Pelicans' scoring potentilial. Defensively, the work is keyed on the Bears' No. 1 scor er. Jack Ward, who hit for 17 points in the winning effort by Bend last week. Conversely, the Bears will again attempt to control h e Pelicans' tliree-pronged scoring threat which was accomplished so well last Friday night at Bend. This consisted of holding the scoring of Terry Ash, Gene Kingsbury and I.anny Guy er down to a minimum. All three left the contest with their fifth personal foul and were held to their lowest senr ing totals as Ash ended the game with eight points, Kings bury with 11 and Guyer with seven. Still, these three pace the per game averages with Ash at 16.2, Kingsbury with a 15.3 mark and Guyer at 10.3. In slowing the Pelican b I g men in the scoring department, the Bears failed to stop the boardwork of Ash and Kings bury completely, as Ash haukd down 14 rebounds and Kingsbury 18 as the two com bined to rake the boards for all but 11 of the Pchcans' game total. Hie Hornets have collected three straiglit victories over Klamath B League competition the touglicst of which appears to have been offered by t h e Chiloquin Panthers last Satur day night. ' "This will be the strongest op position we've had I'm sure. That's not meant to belittle the teams we've played so far, but tlie teams in (his tournament are sure to be stronger. - "For that reason, we'll have a better picture of the team following these games." Thus fill', tlie Hornets have been paced by tliroe people in the scoring department. A 5-8 outside dcadeye, Bob Lewis, is currently the lop point producer with an average of 19 points per game or a total of 57 points. Lewis has hit for 25 field goals and seven of 14 free throw attempts. Next comes Elton Schiro with a 16.3 average on a total of 49 points. Schiro has bit for 21 from the field and seven of 12 from the charity stripe. Third in the point race is LeVoy Young with 45 points for a per game average of 13. The Hornets in their run-and-gun offense have piled up 202 points in three outings for an impressive 67.3 points per game average. "If we can find some scorers such as Lewis, Schiro and Young so that we have more balanced scoring, we could be all right." Currently Terry Bieilby is nearing the averages racked up by tlie aforementioned trio, with a mark of 6.6 points per game in three contests. The Hornets will open their action in the weekend tourna ment in the second contest Fri day night against the host Bil lies, while Central and Oakridge collide an the opener. The Saturday night schedule calls for the first round losers meeting in tlie opener and the first round winners going in the nightcap. "Monday we had the best practice we have had all year," was the head man's comment. 'The kids shook off the loss i the last contest prior to the . and went to work and they were impressive. "1 think they'll be ready." The Pelicans will be attempt ing to raise their won-loss mark to 3-1 against the Bend five in Christmas vacation. However, another two - game set awaits the Pels at Pelican Court following Christmas as Sweet Hume visits for a pair of contests on Dec. 27-28.
