Reduces Threat Of Beetle

Douglas fir bark beetle will not
pos as big a threat next year
if present wet. snowy weather
continues, the Oregon and Cali
fornia Land Grand Advisory
Board was told Monday.

Washington professor, reported
to the board on a survey made
last summer. He said the dread
ed beetle was not as damaging
as expected this year because
of generally damp wcatlier,
' parts of blowdown trees remain.

Rod Fety, chief of the Bureau
of Land Managements local
branch of forest operations, said
the blowdown timber salvage
program on BLM lands in West
ern Oregon was complete.
He said that during the fiscal
year 1963 some 1.5 billion board
feet of timber were sold for
about $36 million. Of this
amount, 926.544.000 board feet
represented salvage sales
valued at 2.4 million, Kely
said.
The board called for more ap
propriations for public land sur
veys and Increased emphasis on
land exchanges.
It heard from Charles H.
Stoddard. BLM director, of
plans to adopt the so-called
"ranger district system of pub
lic land management, similar to
the type used by other land
management agencies such as
the Forest and National Parks
services. The plan will be drawn
up by April and subject to re
view and approval by the O&C
group as oil as the BLM Na
tional Advisory Board Council.

Filings Start
LAKEVIEW The first filing
for county office for nomination
in May primaries was noted
Friday, Dec. 13, when Neil
Friday entered his name in the
office of the county clerk as
candidate for sheriff. Friday is
a Republican. The job is now
held by Donald Woodruff, and
Friday is a deputy.
Positions open in Lake Coun
ty during the coming year are
county judge, county clerk,
county treasurer, and one coun
ty commissioner.
County Clerk Zane Cray an
nounced that the final date for
filing for the May primaries
will be March 10 at 5 p.m.

Couple Marries As Cupid

Iarry Brayton, 3fi, of (Fair
banks, Alaska, was wed to Miss

granted him a last minute visa

riage was unlikely because of
regulations that require a valid
passport or document for for
eign weddings.
Brayton. who came to Russia
as a tourist, has been in the
country illegally since Nov. 29.
But he had announced he was
determined to "sweat it out"
until the ceremony today.
The American, who describes
himself as a former union offi
cial, made three appeals to
Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev
to be allowed to stay. Whether
Wirushchcv actually intervened
was not known.

limousine in which Kennedy

Dearborn under a cloak of se
crecy Saturday night.
It was learned that the fol
lowing work is being done:
A new windshield has been
installed, lending credence to

Springs and shook absorb
ers have been strengthened so
the car can carry an addition
al 1,600 iwuiids of bulletproof

The brakes also have been
stiffened and tlie exhaust sys
tem reworked to accommodate

was told his visa had been ex
tended. "That's wonderful," he said,
and went to pick up his bride
