December H, 196J PACE- JA Autopsy Report Indicates Kennedy Could Have Survived First Shot WASHINGTON 'UPI - The autopsy performed on President Kennedy was reported today to show that he was killed by the second bullet that struck him. but could have survived the first wound. The Washington Post, in a dispatch signed by its medical writer Nate Haseltine, said this was the "as yet unofficial" find ing of the team of pathologists who performed the autopsy at Belhesda Naval Hospital on the night of Nov. 22 after the Presi dent's body was brought back to Washington from Dallas. The hospital, the Pentagon and the White House refused to comment on the Post story Tuesday niglu. White House Press Secretary Pierre Salinger, asked to comment on the re port, said, "I'm not going to discuss it." The pathologists were report ed to have found that the first bullet struck the Chief Execu tive high in the back of the shoulder, about 5 to 7 inches below the line of his collar and became imbedded deep in his shoulder. This was said to have caused "a hematoma, a pooling of the blood inside the neck and shoulder muscles, but no criti cal harm." according to the Post report. The post mortem examination was said to show that the sec ond bullet which struck the President tore the right rear portion of his head so destruc tively that "it was completely incompatible with life," accord ing to the newspaper. It was a deflected fragment from this second bullet that passed out through Kennedy's throat, just above the collar line, giving rise to speculation that the President may have been shot from two angles, the newspaper said. The autopsy seemed to end speculation about the angle from which the two bullets were fired. It said both bullets struck the President from behind. Ac cused assassin Lee Harvey Os wald allegedly fired shots at Kennedy and Texas Gov. John B. Connally from his vantage point in the Texas School Book Depository Building just after the presidential motorcade passed on the street below. Because of the throat wound, questions had been raised as to whether Oswald's bullet could have inflicted it. Nearly $300 million is spent on cosmetics in the United States every year. The pathologists were quoted as saying that the second bul let inflicted such irreparable damage that such a wound is normally considered as causing instant death. However, doctors at Dallas' Parkland Hospital re ported earlier that thoy noted some outward manifestation of life when the President was brought into the emergency room. Dr. James Carrico, a resident surgeon at Parkland who first examined the President, said Kennedy was on his back from the time he arrived at the hos pital until the body was covered with a sheet and removed, pre venting any search for a back wound. Carrico earlier had reported that the President's eyes were open but the pupils were dilated and apparently sightless when he was brought into the hospi tal.
