Ed Sullivan Lives By VERNON SCOTT I PI Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD (ITU-Ed Sul livan lives the kind of New York City lite that many non New Yorkers envision in their daydreams. Ed may not be the Newest, but he's certainly the Yorkest. For instance, he lives in a hotel, the Delmonico at 59lh Street and Park Avenue, where his rent might well balance the national debt. Every night al most without exception he has dinner in a flossy restaurant. And when he's not at home or dining, chances are Old Stone Face will be found in a taxi cab. What's more, Ed is no immi grant to Bigtown on the Hud son. He was born there in 1902. NEW YORK I NEA - This, apparently, is the era of the pocket-sized star. The big names in today's en tertainment firmament seem to have much less glow-power than their counterparts of yesterday. Doris Day and Elizabeth Tay lor may shine their darndest, but they'll never have the magic of Jean Harlow or Greta Garbo. Rock Hudson is no Clark Gable, James Arness no Gary Cooper, Hayley Mills no Shirley Temple. Arc stars simply less glamor ous than before or is the changing industry making the institution of stardom less vi tal? Betty's husband. Robert Peck, produces Ed's CBS-TV show. And the Sullivans stop off in Scarsdale often enough to en joy their grandchildren: Robby, 9; Carla. 8; Vincent, 6, and Andrew, 3. Crazy About Kids "We're really crazy about the kids." Sullivan said. "And we're mighty proud of Betty and Bob, too. They went to UCLA together." Ed's day begins about 10 o'clock when he gets out of bed for breakfast, the only meal Sylvia prepares. It is usu ally the telephone that wakes the man of the house. Slost of the morning and afternoon are devoted to writing his column and gathering news and gossip via the phone. Stars No ie today," says director Otto Preminger. "All I need is a good story. The public goes to the box office to see a story, not a star." "Television is breeding a race of domesticated stars," says Farley Granger. "You see the old movies of Harlow and Ga ble on the Late Show they were STARS. They were big. No more. We're not getting peo ple like that nowadays." Those are the two sides to the question. But there is more to it than those simple state ments. First, just what is a slar? Today the word is bandied about loosely. But at least on Broadway, it is closely defined. A star is a person whose name appears above the title of a play. It's a threefold garr a relaxing diversion, a means of sizing up talent for his show and a source of news. "I still think of myself as a newspaperman, first, last and always. " Sullivan says. For dinner the Sullivans can be found at one1 of five places, Dinty Moore's, Pavilion, Twenty-One, The Colony or Danny's Hideaway. Or, as Ed says, "at any of a million great Italian joints." Second Place Sylvia "We eat out," he says, "be cause Sylvia's cooking can't compare w ith the chefs' of New York, although she is pretty good at broiling lamb chops." After dinner and the theater, and perhaps a night club, the Sullivans get to bed at 1 or 2 a m. Longer Around Norton Yucca and Filomena Pflug in "Last Night, Tomorrow" With Hal Intaglio and Gwyneth Esteban Mr. Yucca and Miss Pflug are stars and Mr. Intaglio and Miss Esteban are classed as featured players. But movies and television don't hew to the definition. They toss the word around so loosely that it has come to be virtually meaningless. All an ac tor needs is a card in the Screen Actors' Guild and a press agent and he's called a star. There arc, however, stars and there are Stars. Genuine Stars still exist. It is a combin ation of box office draw, front page news value and acting ability which sets them apart. Ed's office occupies one of the apartment's six rooms, so it is unnecessary for him to rush off to work in the morn ing. Ten years ago (lie Sullivans bought a suburban home near Southbury, Conn. But returning home from a show one night Ed's car was broadsided by another automo bile, breaking seven of his ribs and fracturing a chest bone. "That made up my mind to get the hell out of the country," says city boy Sullivan. Travel Requirements Ed's Sunday night variety show demands an enormous number of acts and performers almost all of which he roots out by himself. This requires trav eling around the city catching These three qualities are often referred to, by theatrical sophis ticates, as "chemistry." "Elizabeth Taylor." they will say, "has the chemistry that makes a slar." Two actors, of roughly the same ability and the same ap pearance can start at the same time. The public takes to one, not the other. That is star chemistry working. And it continues to work to day. But the products it is cre ating are not quite as magical as they once were. Preminger says it is because the public is more discerning and cares more for a good sto ry than for the actor playing the part. Granger thinks the raw material is not there any more. But even his beloved Manhat tan cannot provide the neces sary number of acts. He trav els to Europe four times annu ally and to Hollywood two or three times a year in his never ending quest for talent. This is the major part of his prepara tion for the show. Each Saturday he pops into CBS for rehearsals, working the entire day. Sunday he continues to smooth out the program, juggling lite acts and perform ances until showtime. The theater is only a few blocks from his home at 53rd and Broadway. Sylvia collects good paintings and was delighted with Ed's gift to her on their 25th wed ding anniversary, an original Renoir. Says Sullivan, "I've been broke ever since. But we collect paintings we like, not just valuable old masters." No Pets Tlie Sullivans have no pets, but they did own a series of dogs during their married life. The last one, Bojanglcs, died at the age of 15 more than two years ago. "His death was such a heart breaking experience that we've decided not to go through that agonizing experience again," Ed explains. Of necessity Ed's hobbies and social activities are inexorably tied up with his jobs. He relax es while he works and works while he relaxes, listening to records, seeing movies, plays and nightclub acts all with an eye to the show and his column. EDUCATION MAIN PURPOSE BLACKSBURG, Va. (UPH Virginia Polytechnic Institute VPI, in an effort to cut down freshman class dropouts, has eliminated the shoe shining and brass polishing chores of new members of the Corps of Ca dets. VPI President T. Marshall Hahn said the period formerly set aside for freshman cadets to perform chores for upper classmen now has been desig nated fur study. "The primary purpose of going to college is to obtain an education," Hahn said.
