South s t heart bid was in spired. He really should have passed his partner's two dia mond overcall. West opened the queen ol spades. East took his ace and, on tlic theory that it was "Be kind to declarers' day." re- turned a low trump. South pro : reeded to take advantage of .' East's kindness. He covered ; East's queen with dummy's king, led (lie ten spot, crossed to his hr.nd with the king of (,spades, cashed his ace of hearts to pick up the last two trumps, finessed dummy's queen of dia monds, cashed the ace. ruffed another diamond, finessed the queen of chrbs. discarded h i s two losing spades on Die long diamonds and wound up with all the tricks except that ace of spades taken by East. South fo!t that North should have either doubled the one spade opening for takeout or at least have raised two hearts to three. North felt that he had hid perfectly, pointing out that the play was extremely luck y. This didn't mollify South at all. He was still mad al North. The argument didn't impress West in the slightest. The game was duplicate and West was sure that Smith's score would be a top. Finally, West could stand it no longer. He said. "If my partner had led hack i spade you idiots wouldn't be arguing. South would have made three hearts or possibly only (wo hearts. But now ou have a top score. W hat more do ou wan!'.'" West was right.
