Newspaper Page TextHERALD ANT) NEWS, Klama.h Fall.., OnSoa Wrfnwd.y. n,cmb,r u PAGE 3D Big Game Success Said During Recent Hunting Big game hunters found deer and elk in abundance in must areas of the stale and probably wound up the 1963 hunting sea sons with as good or better av. erage success than last year, according to the game commis sion. Although final figures of hun ter success and take will not be available until completion of the annual hunter questionnaire survey, the good results of the 1963 seasons are borne out by data collected by game biolo gists in all sections of the state as they checked hunters in the field through the seasons. In northwestern Oregon, the general deer season was termed average although the hunter lake may be down slightly in the mid-Willamette area. The report here indicates that hunt j vr success was average w ith some areas up and some ares down a point or two. The unit season opening was termed only fair but improved through the remainder of the season. Southwestern Oregon hunters also experienced good results as indicated by field checks through the region. Some shift in hunter pressure was noted from the Eden Itidge Bone Mountain area into the Sixes area. This shift was also re flected in the hunter kill of deer down in the Eden Ridge Bone Mountain section and up in the Sixes River area. Complete reports from central Oregon include those for Hood River, Sherman, Maupin. Griz zly, and Wasco. Paul Ebert, district game agent at The Dalles, reports that in the Hood River area hunting pressure was light during most of the season. Hunter success was also lighter than normal until to ward the end of the season when good results were ob tained. Pressure was down in the Sherman unit, reported Ebert, but success of hunters was up. Local hunters working t h e wheat belt west of the Des chutes had exceptional luck. Ebert reported hunting pres sure opening weekend was dou ble that of last year in the Was co unit and remained high through the season. Success on opening weekend was one per cent less than last year, tiien averaged about the same as last year through the season. He estimated that tlie increased hunting pressure here and the same success prcbabiy resulted in a higher total kill for the area than during the previous season. Klamath County success was reported up at least 30 per cent over last year. In the southeast. Ellis Mason district game biologist at Burns reports hunter success fair through the season and verv high during the last week throughout most of the district. Hunters who worked the roads were reported to have had lit tle success as deer were dis tributed from high to low eleva tions and exceptionally wild. There was a general decline in the numbers of hunters through out southeastern Oregon. Good results were reported from most of northeastern Ore gon with buck hunting success as checked in the field, varying from 23 to 40 per cent. The Wenaha unit indicates a decline in numbers of deer taken even though hunting pressure was reported up. Hunting pressure svas heavy in the John Day country with success reported good. The elk season appears to have been a good one as evi denced by field checks in, pop ular elk hunting areas. Bob Jubber, district game biologist in Lane County, reports good results in the Cascade area, with more hunters beginning to find and work this elk country. The northwestern permit hunts in Clatsop. Wilson and Trask units indicate excellent success, probably on a par with any previous season. Along the south coast, Harold Sturgis, game agent at Coquille, reports tlie general season for bull elk comparable to or possibly bet ter than the best of past sea sons. Bull elk numbers taken from the Millicoma area were tlie highest ever recorded and reports from the Eden Itidge country indicate hunter success and total kill both higher than normal for the area. Excellent success was report ed from the Wenaha in north eastern Oregon where Har lan Scott, manager of the Wena ha big game range, said the season showed a very high kill compared to previous years. A greater percentage of f i v c point bulls were reported in tlie kill than in previous years. In the John Day country, game agent Ralph Denney re ports hunter pressure higher than normal, with slow but stea dy hunter success through the season. He estimated hunter success in this area about av erage. Increased pressure was also reported by John Ely. game agent in the Umatillas. He summed up tlie elk season as average, w ith most hunters ob serving elk. Glen Ward, Hepp ner area game agent, reports that hunter success during the general and antlcrless elk sea son was good even though weather conditions were only fair for elk hunting. U.S. District Judge ILewis R. Morgan heard arguments dur ing a six and one-half hour hearing Tuesday on a motion by the Curtis Publishing Com pany for a r.ew trial and, after conferring with attorneys, will decide whether to grant an ap peal. Butts was awarded $3.0f.000 libel damages a U.S. record in federal court last summer. His suit was based on publica tion in the Saturday Evening iPost of an article inferring that he gave away team secrets lo Alabama when he was Univer sity of Georgia athletic direc tor. The defense is citing more than 30 reasons for wanting a new trial.
