Criticism Of Applause
Leads To Resignation
WOODLAND, Ca. (l'PI The
principal of a grammar school
has resigned after refusing to
back down from his criticism of
students' applause at the news
of President John F. Kennedy's
assassination.
Joseph Parham, in a leter to
the Atlanta Constitution,
charged that "a parent, who by
flaunting the law. tolerating
hatred and scorning justice,
brings a child to hate ..." He
said criticism touched off by
the letter was "almost unbear
able." Tile Woodland City Council
passed a resolution censuring
Pailiam and declaring his letter
"does not adequately express
tiie attitude of the Wccdland
people."
Talbot County School Super
intendent Ilujih Dixon said Par-,
ham "has ended his usefulness
here."
In the letter Parham said
that 11-and 12-year-old students
applauded when told of the late
President's death.
Parham refused to appear at
a Parent Teacher Association
meeting Thursday night at the
urging of Talbot County offi
cials "to apologize" for the let
ter. He said he resigned, effective
immediately, because "the ten
sions, misunderstandings and
animosities would be greatly
lessened by my absence."
