Had Sherlock Holmes devot ed his talents to bridge he would have had a lot of fun finding the criminal on this hand after various misadven tures in bidding and play. East took his ace of clubs and returned the suit. South won with he king and prompt ly led his jack of diamonds. . He wanted to steal that dia mond trick before going after trumps, because he felt that it would be much more difficult to perform this robbery later on. Sure enough! West played the seven spot and dummy's king held the trick. There was no way for South to avoid the loss of a trump trick and a spade, but the game had been stolen. Who was the criminal? South had stolen the game, but that isn't really a crime in bridge. Holmes would not have given him a second thought. The crime is to let your opponent steal it from you. Was West the criminal? He certainly could have gone up with his ace of diamonds and set the hand and West probably should have been suspicious of that immediate lead of the jack of diamonds. Holmes would mark him down as an arrpa. sory, but the real criminal was East. East had taken a club trick and was looking at tricks in spades and hearts. One more trick would set the contract and the best place to get It would be in diamonds. East should have led a diamond at trick two and protected his partner. Elementary, Dr. Watson. East was the game's Moriarity. Q The bidding has been: North East South West 1 Pass 1 4 1 V Pass 1 A 1 N.T. Pass ? You, South, hold: 4.AJ4 3 VA65 KQ74 48 2 What do you do now! Wayne Morse, D-Ore. Morse served notice Tuesday night that he opposes the mea sure to create a 30.000-acre park on the coast of Oregon. Tlie Oregon Democrat said the Senate "should think a long time" before approving a bill not backed unanimously by tlie Oregon congressional delega tion. Morse said he objected chiefly tn provisions in tlie bill to al low the condemnation of private land. "We can bave a park m the dunes area of Oregon without taking a square foot of private property," he declared. Morse added that an adequate park could be put togetlver from pub lic property. "In fact," he said, "it is more tlian the public would ever use." Morse siftmitted amendments to the bill which would remove the interior secretary's power to condemn property without the consent of the owner.
