The parade route starts at Veterans Memorial Park, and will p r o g r e s s up Center Street to Main, down the length of Main Street to Esplanade, down Esplanade to Center, turning left to Modoc Field. The Herald and News will present three revolving tro phies for the floats judged most outstanding, and will donate $160.00 in awards for charitable activity in the community. Everyone is invited to see, hear and be inspired by the floats showing the Christmas Story, Christian tradi tions and Christian heritage. Remember, it's this Satur day, Dec. 7. The sun was blinding, stream ing down; jet she could not put on sunglasses for she had to wave to the crowd. The sound of the shot came, at that moment, like the sound of a backfire and she remembers formally saying, "No, no, no, no. no ... " She remembers the rtes. Three times that day in Texas they had been greeted with the bouquets of yellow roses of Texas. Only in Dallas they had given her red roses. She re members thinking, how funny- red roses for me; and then the car was full of blood and red roses. Much laler. accompanying the body from the Dallas hospital to the airport, she Mas along with Clint Hill the first Secret Service man to come to their rescue and with Dr. Burkley, the White House physician. Burkley gave her two roes that had slipped under ilie President's shirt wh. n he fell. his head in her lap. AH through the night they tried to separate him Irom her. to sedate her, and take care of her and she would not let them. She wanted to be wiih him. She remembered th.it Jack had said of his father, w hen his falher suffered the siroke. that he could not live like that. Don't let that happen to me. he had said, when I have to go. Now, in her hand .-lie was holding a gold St. Christopher's medal. She had given him a Si. Christopher's medal when they were married; but when Pat rick died this summer, they had wanted to put something in 111 coffin with Patrick that was from them both: and so he had put in the St. Christopher's medal. Then lie had as-ked her In give him a new one to mark their 10th wedding anniversary, a month after Patrick's dealh. He was carrying it when he died and she had found it. Rut it belonged to him so she could not put that in Ihe coffin wiih him. She wanted to give him somclliing that was hers, something that she loved. So she had slipped off her wedding ring and put it on his finger. When she came out of Ihe room in the hospital in Dallas, she asked; "Do you think it was right? Now 1 have nothing left." And Kenny ODonnell said, "You leave it where it is." Thai was at 1:30 p.m. in Texas. But then, at Bethesda Hospi tal in Maryland, at .1 a.m. the next morning. Kenny slipped into the chamber where Ihe body lay and brought her back the ring, which, as she talked now, she twisted. On her lillle finger was the other ring: a slim, gold circlet Cigarettes Linked To Cancer PORTLAND, Ore. (LTD -The death rale among a large Rroup of cigarette smokers dur ing a period of nearly three years was more Uian twice as high as among a similar croup of non-smokers, an American Cancer Society expert said to day. Dr. E. Cuyler Hammond, pipe-smoking director of (lie so ciety's statistical research, re ported new evidence In the re lationship of cigarelle smoking to dcalh and disease in a paper delivered al the American Med ical Association's 17th clinical meeting. Matching 36.975 men over 40 who smoked a pack of cigar ettes or more per day w ith the same number of non-smokers, Hammond said 1,3K of Ihe smokers died during the 34..1 month period. Only 6f2 of the non-smokers died. Of the cigarette smokers, 110 died of lung cancer while only 12 of the non-smokers died of that disease. Coronary artery disease killed 6.V4 smokers and only 304 non-smokers. Kach man in one group was matched as closely as possible with a man in the oilier group as to age, race, size, residence urban or rural', religion, edu cation, marital status, drinking habits, nervous tension and many other factors. Hammond said he was trying through this "matched pair ana lysis" lo eliminate all possible non - smoking differences be tween subjects in view of suggestions that the link be tween cigarette smoking and dealh rates might be merely in cidental. Of his findings, lie com mented that "it is hard to es cape the conclusion that this difference in number of deaths was due to the difference in smoking habits." This week she learned she placed third In national competition in the teen-division of the 1963 Younq America Gardens con test. She Is showing bell peppers, one of many varieties of vegetables she raises every year. Green Thumb Results In New Honors For Girl Jean McC'lay has a green thumb. Once again she has won na tional honors for the perfection of her vegetable garden, this lime third place in Icon compe tition sponsored by the Young America (lardens Contest. This was her third year in competition. She previously has won three firsts and a second place. The December issue of Flower and Garden Magazine will list Ihe winners. The contest is sponsored by the Flower Garden Foundation. This year her prize, was two 'Stan Hoses from Ihe nationally-known Conard-Pyle Gardens. She also exhibited this year at (lie annual Klamath Basin Pota to Festival and took three firsls on hell peppers, prunes and mis cellaneous entry, plus two sec- MOW tfff. J QUIT!' As for herself? She was hor rified by the stories that she might live abroad. "I'm never going to live in Europe. I'm not going lo 'travel extensively abroad.' That's a desecration.
