Bears, Tribe Set 66th Meeting; Stanford Favored By Two Points STANFORD, Calif. (LTD -California and Stanford, who have been fighting it out on the gridiron since 181C, clash for the 66th time Saturday in the annual "Big Came" of Western college football. The Indians, for some unac countable reason, are rated as two-point favorites despite a 2-7 Improved Oregon Team Figured Despite Eight Sophomore Cagers EUGENE (LTD - Oregon's basketball team should be stronger this season despite the presence of eight sophomores on a 14-man squad, coach Steve Belko believes. Or, to put it another way: "It should be a good season for us if you don'l figure it on wins and losses." That's because the Ducks face the problem of stopping such outstanding big men as Oregon State's Mel Counts, Portland's Steve Anstett and Stanford's Tom Dose without an estab lished center of their own. The forecast is for clear and warm weather and a crowd of more than 80.000 is expected to jam the Stanford Stadium for the game that was postponed one week because of the assas sination of President Kennedy. Stanford has won the last two clashes in a row with Cal and Franz (6-6), Belko says. Lewis Patterson (6-9i, another soph, suffered a broken hand early in the practice season and "is a little further behind." The Oregon coach also has ex perimented with using veteran forwards Jim Johnson 6-5 and Steve Jones 6-5 at the center spot if all else fails. "If we do that, Johnson would be our offensive center and we'd use Jones there on defense," ac cording to Belko. If the center problem can be solved, the Ducks will be in good shape. Johnson and Jones, both two-year lettcrmen, tied for the team lead in scoring last year with 376 points each. Behind those two at forward are Larry Cooley (6-4, who played 117 minutes last season, and Bill Jennings, a 6-5 sopho more. Three letterman guards also return, but the key man at this position will be 6-3 Jim Barnett, rated one of the best sopho mores in years at Oregon. "It's going to take him a little while to adjust," Belko warns, but "we think he will provide some extra punch for us." The Riverside. Calif., star led the frosh in scoring with a 22.3 average last season and cracked the 30-point mark twice. The other guard probably w ill be Elliott Gleason. a 6-2 junior letterman who scored well at the end of last season. Also available are Bob Yates and Pat Loy, both junior lettcrmen. Another sophomore who might surprise everyone is Dave Ka foury, a guard from Portland's Cleveland High School. Klamath Showdown Time Here For Gridiron Powers Of Coast; Huskies Need Win SEATTLE iL'PD - The big West Coast poker session began last September everybody has anted up Washington, USC and UCLA have raised each oilier back and forth and now it's showdown. Husky football Coach Jim Ow ens is going to have to throw his whole wad into the pot Sat urday when his squad takes the field against Washington State. Washington has to w in if there is going to be any more football for its fanatical sup porters, any gala holiday trips to Pasadena or any Rose Soul game against the representa tives of the Big Ten. Even a victory will not guar antee the Pasadena invitation for Washington, but it will give the Huskies the inside track. Just two wveks ago it looked like Washington had everything buttoned up. But then came a game against UCLA and the entire West Coast football pic ture became a mess. The Bruins beat the Huskies 14-0 and now UCLA has a chance to go into the Rose Bowl itself with a won lost record of 3-7 already yet.
