Weekly HOLLYWOOD (LTD - The world is Bob Hope's home. By his own estimate, he trav els an average of 100.000 miles a year, and even in the jet age that means a lot of hours in the air. "I get sick on the ground," he quipped. This year, his television chores will restrict his travels somewhat. He hosts a weekly dramatic anthology "Bob Hope Presents" interspersed with five of his own one-hour comedy va riety shows. He also will appear in two of the dramatic seg ments. "With the series I'll 1 at home more," he said. "I don't have the time to travel that I did in the years before." Huge House Bob lives in a huge, rambling house on five acres in North Meredith MacRae Joins 'Three Sons' HOLLYWOOD (UPII-Mere-dith MacRae, sweet faced daughter of Gordon and Sheila MacRae, has established a fem inine beachhead in the all male household of "My Three Sons," and a welcome addition she is. In this jet-set community fill ed with hard-eyed starlets, 19-year-old Meredith is a wonder fully fresh exception. Despite growing up in a fa mous family the blonde new comer is as naive as a teen-age tourist from the Farm Belt. Maybe more so. Her wholesomeness is a credit to her parents who, she rue fully admits, raised her strictly and away from the limelight of show biz. The result is that Meredith's the kind of girl most parents would like to have their daughters become. One Son's Girl Self-conscious in a black hat and neat plaid suit, she sat in the Brown Derby for lunch look ing as if she should be star ring in a college yearbook rather than tackling the toughest dodge in the world the acting profession. For the balance of the tele vision season Meredith will be seen as a young stenographer engaged to Mike Douglas (Tim Considine) on the "Three Sons" series (ABC-TV). "When I tested for the role I was scared to death," Meredith admitted. "I'd never been in Area Llitlflgs contained hertln ir pi'b llihfd at a public aarvka by tha Htrald and Ntws. When the Hopes first bought the home years ago, it was fairly small. But it grew as Bob's suc cess in show business did. The Hopes simply kept adding to it in all directions. The household staff includes a cook, a house keeper and two maids. In addition to the usual swim ming pool, which is as standard for a star as a dressing room, Bob also has his own two-hole golf course. Bob has lound the perfect so lution to the commuting prob lemhe built his office next door to his house. Its walls ate lined with some of the more than 3O0 awards and citations he has received. Three secretaries handle the myriad of details connected w ith Hope's entertainment and busi front of a camera before. "And I was frightened, too, because everyone else in the cast had worked together for four years. They were one big family, and I was the outsider." Actor Considine helped relieve the tension by asking Meredith out to lunch a week before she reported for work. "He was very kind," she said. "He thought if we got to know one another before we worked together it would help us relax and make our scenes more realistic." Considine's thoughtfulnoss, It appears, was not altogether pro fessional. Since then he has dated Meredith off and on as well as appearing as her swain on the show. Too Much Water CROWN POINT, Ind. UPD j Excessive watering of plants may make the leaves turn yellow or fall off. Too much water affects plant roots because the water fills the air spaces in the soil and the roots suffer from lack of aera tion, says Lawrence L. Hoyle, county extension agent. Some plants, including cactus, jade, peperomia and snake plant. will die almost immediately if over-watered, savs Hoyle. He suggested these methods to keep plants healthy. Kl.mith Falls, Oregon 'Hillbillies1 Star Answers Critics By YKRN'OV SCOTT IT1 Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD (LTD Buddy Ebsen, top dog in television's top-rated series, defends "The Beverly Hillbillies, as good en tertainment against critics who call tlie show lowbrow. Ebsen, a low pressure guy himself, turns away the barbs of self - appointed intellectuals with a slow grin and a wave of his hand. "We've got a wholesome show," he said in his dressing room one day this week. "It's basic concept is to entertain. And I don't believe charges that we appeal to the lowest intel lectual strata. Our mail cavers a wide spectrum of viewers, and now we're doing well in England, Australia and Japan, too. "But I don't Ignore tlie crit ics. In Hollywood it's necessary to operate on the principle that your friends arc your enemies and vice-versa. That takes some explaining, I know, but it's like this: "Your friends over encourage you and your enemies will tell you the truth if you're bad. You have to listen to both sides." To cries that "The Beverly Hillbillies" (CBS-TV) Is in bad taste, Ebsen answers: "Paul Henning (the show's originator and writer! is incapable of bad taste. The entire cast and crew were carefully selected to avoid offending anyone. "I think the basic comment on our show is that the Clampetls are good people, overlooked by the sophisticated element in society. They believe in honesty, thrift, kindness and friendship. "But in today's sophisticated world such virtues as thrift have become outmoded. I be lieve 'The Beverly Hillbillies' points out some of the things that m e wrong with this country and that hurts the critics." A talk with Ebsen is almost like having a chat with Jed Clampelt, the Hillbilly character he portrays on the show. Ebsen is relaxed to a fault.
