It will require first a survey of Ihe technical needs in the country and then the de velopment of a plan for the na tion's educational program in the technical field. Dr. Kimball indicated that six polytechnic institutes are tentatively being considered in a 20-year plan. Oregon Tech's experience in the technical licld apparently has made its per sonnel particularly well quali fied to conduct the survey and also in all probability to help in establishing Ihe technical ed ucation program for the whole of Peru. Hubert Deltosier, depart ment head, and .lean Under wood, will spend Thanksgiving Day and Thanksgiving weekend attending the national conven tion of the National Council of Teachers of Knglish in San Francisco. They will be par ticularly interested in Ihe ap proach which other institutions use to leach English to foreign students. Knglish teachers at all levels bom the first grade to (lie uni versity and from all parts of the United States will be at tending Ihe convention. Oregon Tech's Surveying Technology program, incidentally, is one of only two in the United Slates that arc accredited by the Engineers Council for Professional Devel opment. Foulon was also in terested in the display of mod ern and new type surveying instruments. After being tipped off that David Hull, instructor in the engineering division, is one of those at Oregon Tech active and dedicated to the Explorer program on campus, we phoned him to find out what has been going on. "The last two ses sions," David said, "have been held in Jesse Crablree's high way technology laboratory in vestigating the properlics of concrete." It seems they mixed up sev oral batches of concrete and tasted in molds. The material in the cylinders was steam cured and later crushed in the universal tester to measure the pounds ier square inch that each cylinder would support. The next session will be con cerned with geology since the strength of concrete is di rectly related to the strength of the rock used in tlic aggre gate. The group will be study ing the proerties of rock. A child cannot concentrate properly on learn ing if his health is not up to par. Sight and hearing should be checked. Headaches, tense ness, sluggishness and lack of appetite, may indicate that the child has a health problem. Proper sleep, exercise, and nourishment arc important to school success. Discuss these aspects with your family phy sician. Emotional or psychological problems will interfere with learning. Psychological assist ance is a necessity in such cas es. Correcting this type of prob lem is a job for a well trained professional. It may require guidance and advice to teach ers and parents or it may in volve extensive therapy. In any case, the psychologist is an Im portant consultant. A child's ability naturally is a major factor in his school success. There are various measures of ability. A quali fied individual can pve a rea sonable estimate of Die child's potential to learn, through the combined use of tests and ob servations. This may not be an absolute answer but it will give indications which can be used in the total evaluation of the child. Diagnostic and achievement tests are valuable tools. They can give information concerning weaknesses or gaps in a child's knowledge. They will indicate if lie is below normal in read ing, arithmetic, etc. Some arc more specilic and will tell the area of reading in which he needs help. For example, he might show weakness in com prehension, vocabulary, phon ics (sounds), etc. Some tests will show with which sounds ho is having difficulty. II is necessary In correct physical or psychological prob lems in order for tutoring to be ellective. Tutoring may be based upon tlic diagnostic and achievement tests. If the need is not too extreme, the class room teacher may be able lo handle it. If a separate tutor is used, close cooperation with the school is important. The amount of time should be con Milercd carefully. Make sure the child has an opportunity lo re lax and play. He should be con sulted since his cooperation and motivation arc essential. The advantage of tutoring is Ihe close individual instruc tion. Therefore the tutor must be fully qualified and personal ly acceptable to Ihe student. Richard Hofer, 1223 Martin Street, reported to city police Thursday that his dog ran out of the yard for a short time, re turned foaming at the mouth and died shortly thereafter. .
