Complicated Machine Regulates Body Heat .NEW YORK (L'PH-There U now a complicated machine for doing elaborately what the body, when in health, seems to do simply. It controls body tem perature precisely, indefinitely and automatically. To have your temperature controlled by this mechanical marvel you lie between two of its parts, a blanket and a mat tress. They're made of continu ous square plastic tubing em bedded in plastic foam and are identical.' Each of these systems of tub ing has both inlet and outlet. These are connected to a cir cuitry of pipes around which a fluid is pumped. In the circuit are both a. refrigerating unit and a heat exchange. To one side is an independent heating circuit, to be cut in or cut out. These control the temperature of the fluid. There are short cuts in the circuitry, to be opened or closed, which make it possible to change the tem perature of the fluid from very cold to very hot in a jiffy. Hooked to Computer Presiding is a miniature com puter. A probe is in the person between blanket and mattress through which the fluid is now circulating. The probe is hooked up to the computer w hich makes minute-to-minute calculations of Jacofoy On Bridge NORTH IS AKJ64 VQ84 AK 3 K82 WEST (D) EAST 493 A72 VAKJ76 32 10 52 J 98 64 AJ9 10653 SOUTH A A Q 10 8 6 V 10 9 5 Q7 Q74 North and South vulnerable West North East Sooth 1 Dble Pass 2 A Pass 3 A Pass 4 A Pass Pass Pass Opening lead V K 'Echoes' Can Help By OSWALD JACOBY Newspaper Enterprise Assn. In the early days of contract, the late Ely Culbertson con ceived the idea of a bridge sum mary. This summary covered both bidding and play and con densed a great deal of informa tion into a small volume. While the Culbertson name appeared on the summary, the work was largely that of Albert .Morchead. Last month Al came out with his own contract bridge sum mary. It is sold in both paper back and hard cover editions. A sample paragraph from his book reads, "Encouraging Sig nals. Play or discard' an un necessarily high card. This i called the comeonl tells your partner to lead, or continue leading, the suit. "When you follow an unneces sarily high card with a low one you are completing an echo." North probably should over call with one no-trump instead of doubling the opening heart bid. He has 16 points and 4-3-3-3 titrihntinn. Even then, the chances are that he and South would arrive at four spades in stead of tlie sure three no-trump contract. West opens the king of hearts, and East has the simplest echo situation there is. He wants his partner to continue heart and, Vhilo his highest heart is that "mall three spot, he plays it. If West is not looking at the spots carefully he may not read that three spot as encouraging. If he is. he will wonder about the deuce and continue with the ace. East will complete the echo with the deuce and a third heart lead will let East make a small trump. Later on. West w ill set the hand with the ace of clubs. Play is important! It has been set in advance to whatever temperature the doc tor wanted, and when the probe signals that temperature has, been reached it holds it there to an accuracy of a hundredth of a degree (F) without fuss or bother. This newest of medical-surgical devices was developed at Duke University .Medical Center, Durham, N.C.. and described in a technical publication of the American College of Surgeons by Drs. Robert L. Fuson and C. Ronald Stephen. "The problem of temperature control in a patient is as old as medicine itself," they said. But now it isn't necessarily the nor mal body temperature which is desired. For some kinds of sur gery a steadily maintained tem perature much below normal is wanted, and for a few treat ments a higher than normal temperature is helpful. Permit Drift" To reduce temperature for surgery and maintain it at the lower level, ice bags and im mersion in ice water have been generally used. These methods permit a "drift" in body tem perature which is potentially dangerous, Fuson and Stephen said. "Drift" in their machine is never more than four-tenths of a degree and usually is less. They've designed tube-filled blankets in varying sizes and shapes. The smallest is intended to wrap around an arm or leg. to cool lor heat) it independent ly of prevailing body tempera ture. Another is a head mask shaped something like football helmet which will cool only head and neck. , 'Confusion1 PHNOM PENH, Cambodia I UPI I American officials said Saturday U.S. aid to Cambodia has ground to a halt pending clarification of Chief of State Prince Norodom Sihanouk's go-it-alone remarks. Chiropractor Disputes Hangover Cure Bv DICK WEST WASHINGTON (UPI) - Last month 1 gave readers of this column an exclusive report on a new hangover cure discov ered by a New York advertis ing man. The circumstances under Stassen Eyes WICHITA, Kan. (UPll-Har-old E. Stassen, sounding like a full-fledged candidate, said Sat urday he is testing sentiment on getting into the race for the Republican presidential nomin ation. But Stassen said that before he enters any contests he wants the GOP to adopt his policies and programs. Local observers regarded Stasscn's words as an unofficial entry into tlie presi dential race. The former Minnesota gover nor, who was a disarmament advisor of President Eisenhow er, said in a statement that he had been urged by an "increas ing but limited" number of per sons to seek the Republican presidential nomination. "In testing the extent of this sentiment," Stassen said, "I will do so only on the basis of a thorough understanding by Republican voters of the pro gram which 1 believe our coun try should follow." This sounded logical to me, but I now have at hand a let ter from a chiropractor in Wa pakoneta, Ohio, which puts tlie matter in a different light. (I imagine, incidentally, that the chiropractic business is pretty good in Wapakoneta. Un less you are in training, you are likely to strain a muscle just pronouncing it.) According to tlie chiroprac tor, the 107 cowboys that the adman hired were only an inci dental factor in the treatment. He surmised that tlie "active" ingredient was the type of tum ble the adman took. "I believe tlie fall actually cured this man's headache by jarring displaced vertebrae of his neck back into place. Nerve tension, the immediate cause of his symptoms, was relieved and with it his hangover," the chiropractor wrote. "Such freak accidental ad justments are exceedingly rare, but not unknown to tlie chiro practic profession. It is well known among chiropractors and their patients that almost any kind of headache wheth er due to eyestrain, sinus con gestion, or from alcohol, as here can usually be relieved by an adjustment of the neck." If this chiropractor has the right slant and I have no reason to doubt it then I certainly owe an apology to my readers, particularly those who have gone to the trouble and 7 f.
