".s I Housekeeping Occupations Subject Of Board Meeting SALEM The second meeting of a conference board on revi sion of state employment regu lations in public housekeeping occupations will be held Tues day, Nov. 19, in Portland. La bor Commissioner Norman O. Nilsen states the meeting is open to all interested persons. It is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Bureau of Labor's confer- Oregon Tax Conference Agenda Set The 11th annual Oregon Tax Conference, sponsored by the Oregon Association of Public Accountants, has been sched uled for Nov. 2t . 23 in Port land's Cosmopolitan Motor Ho tel. More than 100 public ac countants, businessmen, tax ex perts and others concerned w ith state and national tax questions are expected to attend. The conference will draw speakers from Denver, San Francisco, Seattle and Portland, and will cover such subjects as profit sharing, mortgages, buy and sell agreements, travel and entertainment deductions, de preciation and the Oregon tax outlook. Prof. Jerome J, Kcssclman of Denver will address t h e group on the subject of depre ciation. Speaking on the lax ef fects of mortgages will be George F. Kratz, instructor in income tax accounting at Gold en Gate University, San Fran cisco. Speakers include two Seat lie tax attorneys Woolvin Pat ten, former assistant regional counsel for the Internal Rev enue Service, and Allen A. Bow den, former special assistant to U.S. Attorney General, tax divi sion. Palten w ill speak on "Whither Tax Revision," and Bowdcn on travel and enter tainment expense as a business deduction. Portland tax attorneys who will address the conference in clude John Foulkes Jones, Leo Meysing and Donald H. Bur nett. Jones will speak on pen sions and profit sharing. Burnett, until recently an assistant attorney general assigned to the Oregon Slate Tax Commission in Salem, will cover the Oregon slate tax pic ture as it appears at that time. In our class at school there are two groups of girls. One group is know as the clicks and the other group is known as the clucks. The clicks are the fast kids and (he clucks are the slow kids. Clicks do their hair up fancy, smoke, make-out, and arc boy crazy. Clucks study a lot, they do not wear Jipslick, even on the sneak, and they seem sort of boring and baby ish. My problem is that I can't make up my mind w hich group I want to join. I look more like a Click, hut my actions fit the Clucks better. Can vou help me decide? Dear Ann Landers: I just fin ished reading the letter Irnm the young man who wrote about his dainty bride who snored worse than any Army buddy he'd ever bunked with. Well, I, too, have been mar ried less than a year. My wife lold me afler two weeks that I had to do something about my snoring because I was keeping her up nights. I went to a doctor and he could find nothing wrong with my nose or throat. He told me I had developed a habit of sleep ing with my mouth open, and that's why I snored. I was determined to break the habit and decided to experi ment. Before retiring I placed two pieces of ordinary adhesive tup over my mouth. This is not nearly so uncomfortable as it sounds. The conference board was ap pointed by the Wage and Hour Commission to review regula tions applying to women and minors employed in hotels, res taurants, motels, taverns, clubs, boarding houses and similar es tablishments. Proposals of a $1.25 wag floor for the industry's women employes and $1.15 for minors was made by the board's labor representatives at an October meeting. A maximum 40-hour, eight-hour day, five-day week also was proposed. No vote w as taken upon the proposals. The board will hear further discus sions on minimum wage and work time standards, it also is expected to take up employes reporting pay when work does not materialize, meal and rest periods and other working con ditions. Mrs. Gertrude Houk Fariss of Portland serves as chairman of the nine-member board which has equal representation of em ployer, employe and public rep resentatives. Revisions recom mended by the board must be approved by the Commission and given a public hearing be fore becoming effective under tile Oregon Wage and Hour Law. Birchers Called 'No Force' PORTLAND (UPI) - The John Birch Society no longer is an important force in national politics, national American le gion commander Daniel Foley said Thursday night. Foley, of Wabasha, Minn., said (lie American Legion never has taken an official position on the society, but he feels founder Robert Welch "has completely discredited himself by his at tacks on the loyalty of former President Eisenhower and the late John Foster Dulles." Foley pointed out that he told licgionnaires in his acceptance speech in September that ex tremism of either the left or the right is "the road to failure." The national president defend ed his organization against charges that it is a "warmong er" because it favors a tough line in dealing with communists "For instance, the Legion at no time has advocated immedi ate invasion of Cuba to end the Castro regime," Foley said "We believe economic measures have not been fully implement ed, and feel they should be pur sued to the end before force is considered." er have to use the tape. Mother punished me for disappointing her by denying me the lovely wedding I had always dreamed of. She said his family was "not suitable to show off to our friends." For two years after our mar riage I tried to get mother to sec Ben's fine qualities and to accept him. She refused to even speak his name. We were nev er once invited to her home for a meal. She came to our home only when Ben was out of the city. Six months ago mother suf fered a heart attack. She made a good recovery afler several weeks In the hospital. The doc tor said she should not be left alone. After she fired three nurses in two weeks, Ben insist ed that we take her into our home. Since mother has been with us I have become a ner vous wreck. YOUNG SPACEMEN Collegiate rocketeers David Guidlcl, 21 (left), and Kelly MacDonald, 20, demonstrate their one-iixth scale model of 24-foot satellite-carrying rocket they hope to launch next summer. If they are successful in orbiting the satel lite, it will be the first ever designed, built end launched by private citizens. A 200 foot diameter balloon filled with helium will take the launcher Hop), carrying rocket, to altitude of 90,000 feet, where rocket will separate from launcher as it fires toward space. Total cost of the project is expected to run $50,000 considerably less then any other satellite launch. The two young men, from El Cerrito, Calif., ere receiving government aid. UPI Telephoto 11 THE DOCTOR SAYS Clearing Up Itchy, Cracked Hands Q I have had "detergent hands" for over a year. They itch a lot, then they blister and crack. I have lo have them in water a lot and rubber gloves seem to make them worse. What can I do? . A This condition has been getting a lot of attention lately. It is usually a chemical irrita tion and not an allergy. When you wear ordinary rubber gloves, your hands become soaked in tlvcir own sweat. This is the rea son the gloves can make things worse. However, rubber gloves that are lined with cotton are available. You should use these whenever your hands would oth erwise come in contact w ith the strong detergents used for wash ing clothes, dishes, walls or floors. Above all, do not use these strong chemicals to wash your hands. When you must expose your hands to strong detergents you may prefer to rub a thin layer of petroleum jelly on them rath er than wear gloves. To wash your hands use one of the non alkaline (neutral or slightly acid) soaps now available. Al kaline soaps remove the protec tive oils in your skin and cause excessive drying. This leads to itching and cracking. Avoid washing your hands frequently and dry them by patting with soft disposable tissue rather than rubbing with a rough towel. (With these measures your hands won't clear up overnight but they should show a marked improvement in 10 days. Q I am using saccharine tab lets. Can they cause my heart to skip a beat? Is this serious? A The tablets are not the cause of your skipped beats. The skipped beats are harmless. You should first learn to accept them as a minor annoyance, then to ignore them. Bean said he also had re ceived telephone calls request ing that the matter lie referred back to the solicitations com mittee for further investigation. He did not identify the callers.
