Is Rescued LA GRANDE LP1 A group of elk hunters, stranded by snow for nearly a week in the rugged Minam River area east of here, was flown out of the area Tues day after walking to a lodge. They were reported in good condition. They said they had had plenty to eat but were glad to get out of the area. Pilot Bob Wallermire of La Grande flew them here from where they were taken to their cars. The group was trapped by a snow storm last Thursday on the Minam Lake side of an 8.000 foot pass. The storm caused drifts as high as 20 feel. The party flown out Tuesday included nine hunters, two cooks and a cowboy. Gude Bob Blank of Baker and three others had left the group after the snowstorm to blare a trail out. Blank said the horses on the trip were worse off than the hunting party, because of lack of food. Senate Hearings On Billie Sol Estes End In Hurry Without Any Answers WASHINGTON' (LP1 '-Senate hearings into the get-rtch-quick career of farm financier Sillie Sol Estes were marked "com plete" today and investigators began working on a formal re port. The dark-haired West Texas farm boy, who built and lost a $150 million empire, moved briefly into the public spotlight Tuesday. He quickly bowed out again, however, after invoking the Fifth Amendment against passible self-incrimination and refusing to answer questions for the Senate investigations sub committee. Chairman John L. MtClellan. D-Ark., did not press Etes with warnings of possible con tempt action. He explained that Estes, still in deep legal trou ble, would not be placed in a position where he might preju dice his cause in court actions against him, McClellan said no further w it nesses would be called in the ui quiry which filled the headlines a little more tlian a year ago. He said the committee wouki bond and lives with his wife now draft report. j and five children in Abilene, The report is certain to eon tain some criticism of the Ag riculture Department's handling of Estes' pooled cotton allot ments. In a presidential ye3r, such a report depending on its tone could become s o m s -thing of a political document. Esles' refusal to answer ques tions was not unexpected since he has pending appeals from fraud and conspiracy convic tions that call for prison terms totaling 23 years. He is free on Tex. After refusing to testify in closed session, Estes was taken into public hearing and asked to identify himself. He replied that he was "Billie Sol Estes, 70 Castle Drive, Abilene, Texas." To alf else he sought the Fifth Amendment's protection. Second Try Successful LANCASTER, Calif. UPK - I ing auto ami burled himself into 1 Wed., Not. II, 1963 1 Pj?e i-A Kerch!
