The Barn Fire Claims Tof PARK RAPIDS, Minn. (UPI) No one knew 3-year-old Laurie Schmilt was in a farm shed which burned to the ground Thursday afternoon. Her playmate, Mark Wilkens, 4, tried to tell his moNier about Laurie's plight, but she did not understand him. Mrs. Charles Wilkens noticed the fire on her own. She called llie fire department at Park Rapids two miles away. Fire men and forestry men were quickly on the scene but the fire was out of control and the storage shed was destroyed. The firemen left. Mrs. Wilkens was told to watch the smouldering ruins because of the danger of forest fires. Then she noliced the body of Laurie, a neighbor's daughter who had come over to play with Mark without anyone know ing it. The boy and girl apparently were playing in the storage shed when the fire broke out. Murk crawled from the shed and ran to the house, where his mother was conferring with a piano tuner. The boy talked excitedly, but she did not understand his pleas.
