Oregon Tuesday, November 5, 1963 Boys Held In Thefts Three teenage boys were picked up here Friday evening as runaways from Oakridge, and laler were discovered to be responsible for two thefts. Police received a call Friday that tlie boys were seen near Klamath and Broad streets car rying two rifles and a police man caught them after a short chase. He found lire rifles where the boys had hidden them. One boy admitted stealing a leather jacket from a car in Klamath Falls and it was later discovered the trio broke into a market in Oakridge and stole money and merchandise. The boys are aged 17, '15 and 14 and are being returned to Oak ridge, which they left last Thursday morning. On the second and third deals the dealer's side is vulnerable but the opponents are not. Both sides are vulnerable on llic last deal. Thus, vulnerabili ty is determined by the deal, not by who has won a game or games. When you score a game you get a 300 - point bonus if you are not vulnerable a n d a S00 - point bonus if vulnerable. If you make four games you get four game bonuses. Slam bonuses are the same as in rub ber bridge. If you make four slams you get (our slam bon uses. There is no bonus for a part score made on the first three hands unless it adds to a pre vious part score and gives you game. TO J-44M HOSPITAL WEDDING A serious automobile accident pottponed but didn't prevent the wedding of Harold Richard Drew and the former Mary Jane Bohlman, both of Tulelake. The ceremony was performed Oct. 31 at the Modoc Medical Center in Alturas, with the hospital staff providing the traditional flowers and cake. Still in criti cal condition with a neck injury, the bridegroom will be flown to the University of California Hospital for special ized surgery this Saturday. Richard Boiling, D-Mo., fears that congressional failure to enact an effective civil rights bill might lead to race riots and "actually wreck the United States." The House Judiciary Commit tee approved a civil rights bill last week. It is aimed at end ing racial discrimination in vot ing, education, employment and unions and in private accom modations such as hotels, res taurants and amusement places. Rep. Jacob K. Javits, R-N.Y., said Sunday there was "every indication" the administration had abandoned hope of getting a civil rights bill through the Senate this year.. Boiling said lie believed the House bill's supporters even tually could get enough voles to get the measure cleared for for floor action by the House Rules Committee, of which he is a member. Committee Chair man Howard W. Smith, D-Va., opposes civil rights legislation. However, Boiling declined to prediot in a local television in terview when he thought t h e bill -would be cleared. He also conceded there might be some changes in the measure "The failure- to pass an ef fective civil rights act might actually wreck the United States," Boiling said. "If there is not an effective civil rights act, then the Negro and the other civil rights people in this country would feel that their government had let them down. "They would almost inev itably, rely on civil disobedi ence. Almost inevitably, also, as they did this, irresponsible elements, not the responsible elements in the civil rights movement, would move in. "Then there would be riots and there would be bloodshed. and this were to happen, I fear that the white majority of tlie country would harden against the Negro and it might be a very long time before we could get effective legislation. "The result of this would be to really destroy the American society internally and make it absolutely impossible for the United States to fulfill its role as the leader of tlie free world." Drew and his bride-to-be were en route to Reno to be married the evening of Oct. 19 when their car went out of control and rolled over in How ard Gulch, 25 miles north of Alturas. Since that lime Drew lias re mained in critical condition at the Modoc Medical Center with a badly fractured neck. Al though he needs specialized sur gery, his condition has been too critical for him to be flown out of Alturas to the University of California Hospital. He remains completely Immo bilized with a neck traction held in place by an apparatus re sembling a giant set of Ice longs set into his head to hold the fleck in place and prevent further serious injury. He lies on a hard surfaced tilt bed that allows him to be turned without changing his position. The new Mrs. Drew was also hospitalized from the acci dent for a week with extensive bruises and abrasions. Drew will be flown from Alturas ear ly Saturday morning to the UC Hospital for immediate surgery, and the couple decided to be married before he lefl the Mo doc Medical Center. The stuff of the hospital went together to make the occasion as festive as possible and bought a corsage for the bride as well as the wedding cake. Drew's doctor, Dr. Lloyd Shan non, stood as best man while Rev. Leslie Chism of Alturas read the services. In addition to the hospital staff as gues's al the wedding, Drew's moth er, Mrs. D. It.
