Jury Selection Moves Slowly In Death Trial MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (LPI) Is the female of the species more deadly than the male? Take a case o( murder. Pre sume yourself to be the defen dant. You're innocent. That's what you keep telling yourself the defendant is clothed by the law with the presumption of innocence. Then you watch the jury se lection. If your name is Tilmer Eu gene Thompson, you sit in a courtroom to which your case has been moved in a change of venue. The slaying of Mrs. Car ol Thompson, 34, the defendant's wife, took place in St. Paul March 6. But it was moved out of there when the defense won its contention that the publicity there might lend to bias pros pective jurors. Young Man Confesses To Murder MIDLAND. Tex. (LTD - A muscular young man sat som berly in his jail cell today fac ing murder charges in the bludgeon-slaying of the socialite wife of a Texas millionaire oilman-sportsman. Police said James Lee Mar lon. 22. a Negro, confessed he dragged Mrs. Fred Turner Jr. screaming from a balcony into her bedroom and beat her to death with his fists and pistols she had w ielded. Marion, a shortordcr cook, said Mrs. Turner, fifi, surprised him while he was burglarizing her $500,000 home. He quoted her as saying. "I'm going to kill you." and said he attacked her after she fired a .38 auto matic pistol wildly. "I was looking for money." Marion said. The 5-foot-4, 158 pound man said he had been drinking heavily. Two officers said he waved a pistol at them menacingly when he fled the victim's home. Turner, whose horse Tomy Lee won the 1959 Kentucky Der by, learned of the slaying when he returned home from a trip to his Las Vegas. N. M., ranch. The couple's daughter, Mrs. Clarence Scharbauer Jr., was knocked unconscious by the at tacker when he fled the man sion. Marion was arrested Tues day cowering in the attic of a nearby garage. Surgeon Discusses 'Absurd' Form Of Cancer Likely Carried By Insect SAN FRANCISCO (UPI)-Dr. Denis Burkitt, an outspoken Irishman who is now the top surgeon in Uganda, came to town today to talk about a "bi zarre, totally absurd" form of cancer which he believes Is carried by mosquitos. The best thing about It, he said, is that it can often be cured. Burkitt discussed the disease which others call "Burkitt's Tumor," and which he calls "an absurd lymphoma" in a press briefing at the 40th annual clinical congress of the Ameri can College of Surgeons. . The congress has drawn near y 12.000 fellows of the college, including more than 7.500 sur geons, to a week-long series of lectures, discussions and exhi bits that amount to a post-graduate course in surgery. Burkitt, who went to Uganda in 1MB with the British Colonial Service and is now chief gov ernment surgeon for the newly independent nation, said the tu mor named for him is the most overwhelmingly common form of cancer found in children in tropical Africa. Prevalent In Africa It Is almost nonexistent in the Western World, he said, but in certain areas of Central Africa it's found in children of every race and every circumstance. Burkitt said he has been able to gather certain data about the disease despite rather severe limitations on the research re sources available "I worked three and a half yean on a $75 grant." He spent seven years, he said documenting the geographical distribution of the disease, and this and other factors convinced him that it was caused by a virus and probably was carried by mosquitos. Factors of elevation and dis tance from the equator combine he said, to indicate that the dis ease cannot occur where the minimum temperature ever drops below so degrees. This i the minimum, he said, below which most mosquitos (ail to propagate and it also provides the heavy rainfall and vegeta tion ;iecessary for them. "There is no doubt at all." he said, "that this is an environ mental cancer." So the trial was moved to the twin city of Minneapolis to a courthouse about 10 miles from the one in which it would have been held in St. Paul. But people in Minneapolis had been reading about the case, too. Question 45 Persons In two days of jury picking, 45 persons were questioned. Twenty-five of them were ex cused because they indicated they had formed an opinion In the case. Thompson. 35. a Minnesota farm boy who worked his way through law school, graduated second in his class, had a ris ing law career well in hand as a highly respected criminal at torney. He was an elder in a St. Paul Presbyterian Church. His wife, mother of four, and a church worker and choir sing er, was killed by bludgeon and knife in as brutal a fashion as can he imagined. The state con tends Thompson masterminded a plot which involved his form er college mate Nortnan J. Mastrian as middle-man and a hard - drinking salesman, Dick V. C. Anderson, as the execu tioner. Anderson Confessed Anderson has confessed he did it and has said it was mur-der-for-hire. He is reported to have confessed he botched the job, to have said the plan was to rap Carol on the back of the head and knock her out, then dump her nude body in a bath tub to make it seem she fell in the bathroom and drowned. At the time of her death there was Sl.Ofil.ono in life and acci dental death insurance in force on Mrs. Thompson, with her husband as beneficiary. Mediators Try Again PITTSBURGH IUPP Fed eral mediators, who helped set tle Westinghouse Electric Cor poration's contract dispute with the International Electrical Workers Union UUE, have moved into company talks with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers MBEVV). Joseph Piconke of Washington and Arthur Wellman of Pitts burgh joined the IBEW-West-inghouse talks Tuesday in hopes of negotiating a settlement be fore the union's contract ex pires midnight, Oct. 31. The firm, which meets today with the IBEW, also is conduct, ing negotiations with the Unit ed Electrical Workers (UE). It is not found on the islands of Zanzibar and Penba 30 miles off the African coast. This means, Burkitt said, "that the cause cannot cross 30 miles of sea." The most bizarre and "ab surd" aspect of the cancer, he said, is the manner in which it may settle almost anywhere in the body jaw, genitals, thyroid and so on except the spleen, which ordinarily should be a prime target. UPI Telephoto France Urges PARIS (UPI) - French For eign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville called today for a sweeping reorganisation of the Atlantic Alliance. He asserted that the present North Atlantic Treaty Organ ization (NATO) is out-of-date. But he said a major reorgan ization will not be possible un til other European members pull their full weight. . Couve de Murville delivered a broad foreign policy review to the National Assembly as (t debated the foreign ministry's 19S4 budget. "France," he said, "has de cided to play her own role in defense." That, he said, is why she has decided to pull the bulk of her land, sea and air forces out of NATO. "The day when the other Eu ropean members of the alliance show the same will, reor ganization of the Atlantic Alli ance on a durable basis will be possible," he asserted. "I know of no cancer which Is so responsive to treatment," he said. "I've treated about AO patients, and although it's diffi cult to follow up because most of them disappear back into the bush, I know at least 20 are still alive four months to three years after treatment.
