Pels Prep, hv final Speedy Comets Eyed :y Klamath Falls '11' A dismal football season ends for the Klamalh Falls Pelicans Friday night. Bob Williams' Pels will at tempt to salvage another win . against six losses a they travel to Crater for the final fray of the year. The Pels, after six consecu tive setbacks, posted the initial win of the season last Friday night at Modoc Field against the surprisingly-strong Ashland Grizzlies. Collecting the second win of the season against the Crater Comets is expected to be even more difficult. The Comets have given the favored teams in the confer ence Medford and Grants Pass all they could handle be fore dropping close decisions. And the Comet winless mark -In counting play is expected to : fire them high for the Pelicans. Last year the two teams bat tled to a scoreless deadlock on Modoc Field in a game still questioned by players, fans and coaches. It was a driving Pell can team in the closing seconds of this contest which missed a winning touchdown by the "tip" of the football as the gun sound ed. f This situation could inspire the Pelicans in the fray in an effort to make amends for this questionable tie which in the eyes of the Pelicans was as good as a defeat. The Comets also had scoring probes to no avail, with Mike Glines, current Oregon Tech quarterback, racing 65 yards for a TD. A clipping penalty ruled against the Comets called this run back. Defense has been a large part of the Pelican practice sessions thus far this week and rightly so. It's an outstanding group of backs the Pels must contain against the Comets If the sec ond win of the season is to be recorded. - Such people as 186 pound halfback Darrell Summerfleld, 160 - pound halfback Sherm Kl ger and 165-pound fullback Vern Swanson to cite just three. These three possess nearly as much speed as the Pels have seen all season and the statis tics on them are testimony to this fact. In three pre-conference viclo. ries, Swanson tallied seven touchdowns for 42 points and has been averaging over 100 yards gained per game. His high game was in a 48-13 rout of Coquille in which the Crater speedster rushed for 208 yards in just 13 carries. The Comets are considered not as large as last year but considerably faster. Leading the forward unit is Denny Ryerson, a 170-pound tackle converted this year from halfback. The Comets have been togeth er as a team since winning the frosh championship, thus are considered one of the stronger clubs in the circuit. The Pelicans lost the services of halfback Mike Kitchlng in the Ashland contest and as of Tuesday night his being ready for the Crater contest was ques tionable. At first It was believed he was suffering from a sprained ankle, however, additional X rays disclosed a possible hair line fracture. Another X-ray was to be tak en today for a final determin ation. Still, Hitching is not ex pected to see action against the Comets. i Other than this injury and an earlier injury to Rick Gustaf son sidelining him, all other members of the squad are ex pected to be ready. Additional work on both of fense and defense was slated for today before tapering o f f Thursday. Last year the Pels closed out the 6cason with a loss to the Bend Lava Bears. It didn't sit 'well with them during the off season. This year, in addition to get ting the second win of the year, the Pels will be out to prevent a recurrence of last year's final contest. Moyer In Unpopular Decision SAN JOSE, Calif. UP1 -Former middleweight champ Denny Moyer of Portland, Ore., and Mexican middleweight king Mcno Ayon of Mexico battled to a highly unpopular 10 round draw Tuesday night. The verdict was lustily booed by the 800 fans who thought that Moyer had gained the edge. But referee Fred Aposloll of San Francisco, the only official, called tlie bout a 3-3 draw. The Ducks have rolled up 2, 307 yards in 370 plays in six games for a 384.5 average. Utah Stale was first with 2. 365 yards in 381 plays in six games for a 3W.2 average and Wichita was second with 1,928 yards in 304 plays in five con testa for a 385.6 average. Oregon has gained 1,225 yards by passing on 72 completions of 128 passes attempted for a 204.2 average. Baylor led with a 227.4 average on 1,137 yards on 81) for 157 in five games. The Ducks were fifth in scor ing with 166 points for a 27.7 average. First was Utah State with a 37.5 average. Oregon quarterback Bob Ber ry was fourth in the nation in total offense in individual sta tistics. The junior signal caller das gained 1,109 yards in 139 plays in six games. Navy quarterback Roger Staubach led with 1,306 yards on 211 plays in six contests. Oct. 31 is the closing date, the last day of tlie season for anglers to try for trout under the summer reg ulations. ' Beginning Nov. 1, , anglers must fish according to the win ter regulations. Contrary to the slimmer rules where all waters are open unless specified, the winter rules list only those wa ters open to winter angling. NEWS, Klamath Falls, Oregon Study On Offered Again this year elementary, junior and senior high school students will have the opportu nity to gain more knowledge of conservation and management of Oregon's wildlife resources at special assembly sessions sched uled during the coming school year. The opportunity is made possible by the wildlife pro grams sponsored by the game commission for the 14th consec utive year in cooperation with the Oregon school system. Two members of the commis sion's department of informa tion and education, Austin Ha rrier, education supervisor, and William Hosford, assistant, will spend the next five months touring schools throughout the state presenting illustrated wild life talks and showing colored wildlife films to student groups. Last year more than 36.000 students were in school audi ences where wildlife programs were presented. These pro grams were presented in 145 schools of the state. Each year a different phase of wildlife management is discussed, which may include general conserva tion, big game management, fisheries management, water fowl management, and hunter safety and survival. Kimball Crater v1 Wednesday, October 30, 1963 Wildlife Students and Grant County districts and the Clatsop district were pre sented programs in late Octo ber. Tile travel itinerary then includes schools in Northeast ern Oregon and Central Oregon in November, followed by the south Willamette Valley in De cember. Southern Oregon schools are scheduled for Janu ary, as well as those schools in the north Willamette. The south coastal area will be visit ed in February, with pick up schools unable to schedule at other times set for March.
