Tueiday, October 29, 1903 on the sixth hole on the St. Horn la Breteche course which was so shrouded in fog that the final round had to be cut to nine holes, making it a ftf-hole tournament instead of the scheduled 72. The U.S. had started out the day tied with Spain for the team lead and the .Spaniards, playing ahead of the Americans were three shots back after five holes. It looked like it was going to he a real race when both Nieklaus and Palmer trapped their approaches. But Nieklaus, who had four Airdies in the first five holes, made it five birdies in six holes when he blasted out of the trap into the cup 75 yards away. Pal mer came nut on the green and sank ins putt for a par and the U.S. was in. The 23-year-old Nieklaus also won the individual champion ship. Surgeon Tests Grid Helmets CHICAGO (UPD A surgeon, seeking to solve football's head injury problem, said today that a player's helmet is subjected to blows of more than 5,000 times the force of gravity in ordinary contact with an oppos ing player. This is about the same num ber of G's absorbed by a base ball belted for an upper deck home run, he said. Dr. Stephen E. Reid, an as sociate professor of surgery at Northwestern University's Med ical School, told the National Safety Congress that each Sat urday afternoon for the past two seasons he has wired a pair of bruising fullbacks (or sound. Key Men Called In Probe 'BALTIMORE (UPD One o( Maryland's most controversial politicians, a dead boxer's last opponent and the opponent's manager are due here today before a grand jury probing the death of Baltimore heavyweight Ernie Knox. The jury has summoned James H. (Jack) Pollack, long a center of state and city poli tical battles, a Baltimore fight game figure and former mem ber of the Maryland State Ath letic Commission; New York heavyweight Wayne Bcthea who knocked Knox out in the ninth round at the Coliseum here on Oct. 14 and Bethea's manager, Bobby Gleason. Pollack, according to state's attorney William J. O'Donnell, asked to testify in the case. A probe was launched by the grand jury after an autopsy showed Knox weighed only 153 pounds two days after the fatal fight in which he was officially listed as weighing 178 pounds. Bethea was carded at 205 pounds. Knox lapsed into a coma sev eral hours after his defeat and died after a 31-hour coma.
