Nuclear Carrier Ruled Out ' WASHINGTON UPI -Defense Secretary Robert S. Mc-Namai-a may have added an other to his already long list of congressional critics when he rejected the Navy's request for a nuclear-powered super carri er. McNamara ordered the Navy Friday to proceed immediately with construction of a conven tionally powered super carrier, first authorized in 1962, but de layed at the Navy's request to permit consideration of nuclear power. The Pentagon announcement carefully noted that JIcNa mara's decision was "motivat ed by a desire to avoid further delay, and does not pro-judge the larger question of the ap plication of nuclear power to the Navy's surface vessels in the future." But the order came only five days before congressional hear ings on the subject wore to start, and Sen. John 0. Pas,tore, D-n. 1., chairman of tlie Joint House-Senate Committee on Atomic Energy, said Friday night lie was "very much con cerned" about the decision. 2 Slayers Set Free SALEM UPI - Two con victed Salem-area slayers have been paroled from tlie Staled Prison, one after serving 18 months of a 7-ycar sentence.
