Transformed from an old lodge hall, the gallery is the largest botween Los Angeles and Seattle, according to the owner. Purvine was selected recently as a member of the inspection team repre senting the Northwest Associa tion of Secondary and Higher Schools for the accreditation of Weber Stale College in Ogdcn, Utah. Oregon Tech was accred ited by the association last year. The following information about one of Oregon Tech's for eign students was taken from an article in last week's stu dent nowspacr, "The Miler." Darcssalaam (meaning Hea ven of Peace I in Tanganyika, East Africa, is the home of Narcndra 'Surlec' Palel. Narcndrn is enrolled in elec tronics technology at OTI. He graduated from high school in Darcsalaam at 17 years of age, but he has had anotlier hirtliday since graduation. He had three very good friends in high school. They called them solves the Four Aces. Now one is in bidia, anotlier is in Kng land, one is still in Tanganyika, and uNarendra is here in Klam ath Falls. He worked his way through Egypt, Italy, France, Monaco, England, acioss tin- ocean and Hie United States to Klamath Falls by doing odd jobs and by reading palms. Ho learned about OTI through tlie V S. In formation Service. Narcndra knew some English when he left home, but he attended a school of the English language for two months while lie was in England. Now he .speaks Eng lish with almost no accent. Narcndra speaks six lan guages: English, Swahili. North Tanganyika, Gumarali. French and Hindi. Artist Turns Former Hall Into Beautiful Art Gallery YHEKA It look an artist of true merit to transform what was once an old lodge hall into a beautiful art gallery in Yrcka. Lee Gossett, who has his paintings displayed in Italy, Greece, France, Mexico, Can ada, and nine western states, including California, owns and operates what is now known as tlie Siskiyou Art Gallery, situ ated in what was the former Knights of Pythias Hall on West Miner Street, Yrcka. Although t h c gallery has space to accommodate 300 pieces of art work, Gossett lias about 100 various paintings currently on display, all done by Siskiyou County artists and aucmenled by clever lighting effects. The works on exhibit are ar ranged to give the spectator an opportunity to view and study each, without distractions from one anotlier. What once served as a dining hall and was the scene of many gay and festive parlies has been partitioned to provide liv ing quarters for Gossett and his wife, Olive. The other half of the room is arranged for tlie students who are studying under Gossett or for the Sis kiyou Artists Association to hold its meetings. Gossett states that he can safely claim that the Siskiyou Art Gallery is the largest one between Los Angeles and Seat tle, and one that is strictly de voted to the display of art only. There is a general rule that when you lead a suit of four or more cards you should lead fourth best unless your suit is headed by certain specific high card combinations. There is one conspicuous ex ception to this rule that is well illustrated in today's hand. South doesn't have much of an opening bid but his partner's hand is very sound and the contract of four hearts is a good one. South wins tlie opening spade in his own hand and takes an immediate diamond finesse. Perhaps he should have gone after tlie trumps first but the actual result would be no dif ferent. Both finesses are wrong. East takes his king of dia monds and a shift to a club is clearly indicated. Also, he should load Ihe nine of clubs and not his fourth best. It is not iniortanl to give his part ner a count of tlie club suit, hut it is more important lo let his partner know that he doesn't hold a high cluh South will play cither the king or tlie queen. It shouldn't make tho slightest dillorcncc to West. He will see that the only chance lo beat the contract will lie lo let South hold that trick, so if West is on his toes he will play the deuce of clubs. Ansr Mondar formally opened to the public, he has already had more than 300 visitors. Gossett, who arrived in Yre ka in 19K2 from San Diego, was horn in Colfax, Wash. When he was 2 years old, his parents moved with him to Canada where he was raised. He has studied art at the Coronada School of Fine Arts at La Jolla, Calif.; Arts and Crafts at Cho niards and Fine Arts, both at Los Angeles; and he holds a teacher's" degree as a painter. He feels that anyone can ben efit from tlie study of art, as it not only develops the potential arts, but gives others not so talented an appreciation of art. He started his classes with 27 students and now has 125 in cluding college students and private individuals. During World War II. while in the service of the Coast Guard, Gossett was commis sioned to create paintings from action scenes. He succeeded in producing 30 of them, all por traying with dramatic impact the action of war at sea. Basin Briefs BONANZA MR. AND iMItS.
