Pioneer League President Sees
Death Of Circuit Now Certain
SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) -President
Claude Engberg of
the Pioneer League said today
there was no hope for survival
of the Class A circuit which
gave birth to many of base
ball's top stars.
Engberg, head of the league
which has been in operation
since 1939, said he was in
formed by the National Associ
ation office that sufficient work
ing agreements will not be
available for the operation of
the league in 1964.
Engberg said the action
meant his league, composed of
teams in Idaho and Montapa,

The league operated with six
teams last season but Boise
withdrew at the close of the
campaign, citing lack of at
tendance and high operating
costs as its reason for quitting.
The league has operated con
tinuously since 1939, except for
three years during World War
II. It operated as a Class C
league until last year when it
was made a Class A organiza
tion. The league was considered
one of Hie best organizations in
minor league baseball and pro
duced such big league names as
Larry Jansen, Billy Martin,
Dale Long, Larry Jackson, Sol
ly Hcmus, Dick Stuart, Johnny
Temple, Ed Bailey, 'Woodie
Held and many others.

pects, compiled by the Oregon
State Game Commission:
Northwest: Prospects good for
opening of elk season in north
coastal area; most animals in
dense cover. Duck hunting good
in coastal bays: pheasant and
quail hunting fair.
Southwest: Elk hunting ex
cellent in Coos-Douglas area
and poor in Rogue management
unit. Waterfowl hunting fair in
upper Coos Bay, poor in Rogue
River Valley.
Central: Elk widely scattered
and hunting fair in Mt. Hood
National Forest, best along
Badger, Fifteenmilc and Eight
mile creeks. Waterfowl hunting
slow along Columbia River;
pheasant hunting good with dogs
in Wasco, Sherman and Jeffer
son counties; chukars plentiful
but hard to find in Deschutes
and John Day canyon.
Northeast: Elk hunting poor
in Hoppner and Wheeler units,

coaches.
Hergert scored five touch
downs and gained 150 yards as
the Pioneers whipped Pacific
Lutheran 63-27 Saturday. Reich
hauled down eight passes for 7.1
yards in the Missionaries' 38-7
loss to Whitworlh.
Hergert's rampage made him
the league's rushing and scor
ing leader. He now has gained
444 yards in five games and
has a 4.9 average per carry. He
has scored 12 touchdowns (or 72
points.
Teammate Bill Henselman is
the passing leader with 41 com
pletions in 61 attempts for 632
yards and eight touchdowns.
