HERALD AND NEWS. Klamath Fall, Oregon Wednesday. October 23, 1963 PACE-JA 'Big Blast1 Near Bellingham Postponed BELLINGHAM (UPI)-What-com County's big boom, to get rid of approximately 15.000 pounds of old dynamite, has been postponed indefinitely. H. P. Stubbs, state explosives Inspector, said Tuesday that more information is needed be fore an Army demolition team can blow up the cache of old explosives in a 600-foot tunnel about 30 miles east of here. The date for the demolition job tentatively had been set for Tuesday. However, Stubbs said the date had to be called off to allow more time to inspect the dynamite and the likely ef fects of the explosion. He said most of the dynamite, contained in approximately 300 Republican Captures N.D. Seat BISMARCK, N.D. (UPI-The nation's newest congressman. Republican Mark Andrews, said today his triumph signifies the GOP is on the move across the country. Andrews, 37, a "gentleman farmer" with the backing of Sen. Barry M. Goldwater, de feated Democrat John Hove, an English professor, in a special congressional election Tuesday. "It feels sweet to win," An drews said. He shied away from making a victory state ment until nearly 90 minutes after Hove conceded. Andrews will fill the unex pired term of the late Hjalmer Nygaard, a Republican. Andrews' victory cut off a Democratic surge of recent years in this traditionally Re publican though maverick state. It also upset Democratic hopes for a congressional seat they wanted badly. Hove had run with the bless ing of President Kennedy. Atty. Gen. Robert F. Kennedy and several Democratic senators had campaigned in North Da kota on his behalf. Andrews, who divides his time between living in the state's largest city, Fargo, and raising grain and sugar beets near Casselton. N.D., had the endorsement of former Presi dent Eisenhower in addition to Goldwater's support. He was defeated two years ago by Democrat William Guy in a gubernatorial contest. But Andrews, an energetic cam paigner, waged an exhaustive whistle slop battle through the 23 countries in North Dakota's eastern congressional district. Andrews' victory leaves the North Dakota congressional del egation in control of the Repub licans, 3-1. The lone Democrat is Sen. Quentin Burdick. Guy is serving his second term. cases, is the old-fashioned kind made by mixing sand and nitro glycerin. He said the dynamite now was worthless, but danger ous. Stubbs said the nitro glyc erin probably has seeped to the bottom layer of the cases. "The nitro is still tliere in the tunnel," he said. "And when it's touched off, it'll be like fir ing a huge, long-barreled rifle. 1 won't want to be anywhere near the muzzle." Stubbs said the state also was exploring the possibility of dis posing of the dynamite by seal ing off the tunnel or burning it. But he said that sealing off the old explosives would not remove the possibility of someone drill ing into the cache and he doubt ed if the tunnel would get enough air to burn the ex plosives. State Mines Inspector Robert Pierce and members of the 170th Ordnance Demolition Team from Ft. Lewis went into the tunnel Tuesday to examine the problem. If the demolition job isn't done soon, it probably will be delayed until spring be cause winter weather soon will close the road into the moun tainous area. The tunnel is near the old Lone Jack gold mine w hich pro duced several million dollars worth of gold and gold ore be fore operations were suspended years ago when a snow and landslide destroyed the mine's concentrating mill. Two elderly men, Robert Cole, 75, Maple Falls, and Rob ert Averill. 78, Bellingham, said they have been trying to restore the mine and mill to operation under a leasing arrangement. They said they have worked off and on at tlie project since 1941. Averill said an assay of a re cent ore sample indicated 47 ounces of gold to the ton. He said that he and Cole tried to use some of the old dynamite eight or nine years ago to blast roadway in the hard rock area near the mine. "We couldn't get the stuff to go off," Averill said. Negroes Give City Additional Time BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UPI) Negro leaders, denying they had backed down from an ulti matum, settled back today and waited for Birmingham to inte grate its police force within "a reasonable length of time." If Negro policemen are not hired within this period, "we will have to demonstrate," in tegration leader Martin Luther King Jr. said Tuesday. But he did not set a deadline. Two weeks ago, King gave the city until Tuesday to hire 25 Negro policemen or face a Champion Carcass Steer Fed By Alturas Feeder ALTURAS The grand cham pion carcass steer shown at the Pacific International Livestock Exposition in Portland w a s shown and fed out by an Altur as cattle feeder, Dr. Al Baird. Not only did Baird have Uie top steer, but three other steers he fed out placed in the top 10 of the show. The champion steer, a sum mer yearling purebred short horn bred by Ed Albaugh of Adin.. Calif, was judged sixth on the hoof but gained the cham pionship rating when judged on the h o o f on the basis of his trimmed retail value Third place, seventh place, and the eighth place steer shown by Baird were also bred by Al baugh. The third place steer, a jun ior yearling cross bred Hereford and shorthorn, placed fourth on the h o o f. The seventh place purebred shorthorn placed eighth on the hoof; and the eighth place junior yearling commercial shorthorn placed third on the hoof. The on the hoof judging was on conforma tion of the animal. Baird stated that all four of his top yielding steers were fed on a straight Purena concen trate ration and barley He also said the breeder, Albaugh, was raising his cattle on basis of rate of gain and yield of car cass cut as well as conformation. Baird stressed that these steers were fed with the same eco nomics in mind as that of any feed lot. and the cost of feeding these steers was right in line of that of any commercial lot. Interesting to note was the steer which graded grand cham pion on the hoof was eliminated from the competition when it wouldn't come up to grade at all on the carcass judging. Of the top 10 steers, five were shorthorn, three red Angus, and two Hereford. The grand champion sold for 41 cents a pound on the hoof. renewal of racial demonstra tions that brought mass arrests last spring. The city council Tuesday rejected the demand, stating such employment is gov erned by civil service regula tions which have no racial re strictions. "I have no intention of trying to circumvent (civil service) laws for any reason or under any pressure," said Mayor Al bert Boutwell. The city council adopted a report by its Public Safety Committee calling King's de mand "arrogant and unrealis tic." The council flatly refused to hire Negro policemen "as a matter of special privilege." King, after meeting more Uian five hours with other Ne gro leaders here, withdrew the demand.
