PAGE SA HERALD AND y c BULL SALE DIGNITARIES Among thole present for the 19th annual Modoc Coun ty Range Bull Sale last Sunday were, from left, Kenneth Flournoy, Likely, Calif., president of the Modoc Bull Sale Comrftittae with Walter (Rodman, California Beef Council manager; Carl L. Garrison, Woodside, recently nominated "Cattleman of the Year" for California who bought nine of the top 20 bulls from the sale for the Porter Estate; and John Weber, Alturas cattleman and first vice president of the Cal ifornia Cattlemen's Association. 79 Tested Bulls Go At Modoc Sale ALTURAS Seventy nine rale of gain tested bulls were sold for a total of $38,750 at the 19th annual Modoc County range bull sale on Sunday, Oct. 13. The sale average was $480.50, con siderably lower than last year's average of $619. Cattlemen and committee members attributed the dip in the sale average to the re cent fluctuation in the cattle market and the fact that be cause of the lowered market many cattlemen have not as yet sold their cattle for the year. The top 10 bulls, however, moin- tained a high average of $787, while the top 24 averaged $654. Grand champion bull of the sale for the second year in a row was raised by Frank Tur ner of Sattley, Calif., who again received the Modoc County Cat tlemen's trophy The Turner bull sold for $1,275 to Kenneth Morrison of Agoura, Calif. This bull made a gam on the test of 2.14 pounds per day ince the CHAMPION BULL OWNER For the second consecu tive year, Frank Turner, left, received the trophy for raising the grand champion bull at the rate of gain tested range bull sal In Cedarville. Presenting the award is the Modoc County Cattlemen's president, Dwayne McGarva. Seventy nine of the 81 bulls put on pasture for the rata of gain test were sold for a total of $38,750. CHAMBER OAAMENTS by GEORGE T. CALLISON Manatee KLAMATH COUNTY CIIAMSIX OP COMMHCE The chamber's board of direc tors, at its hincheon meeting asl Wednesday, approved a new meeting schedule for the current fiscal year which calls (or three board meetings per month as contrasted to the five or s 1 x meetings which have been held monthly curing the past year. The schedule calls for a lunch eon meeting on tlie second Wed nesday of each month, an eve ning policy and planning session on the third Wednesday, and an other luncheon meeting mi the fourth Wednesday. There will be no board meetings the first week of the month or during the fifth week should there be one, unless it Is a social meeting called by the president. Chamlier president James F, Slilwell has announced that it is bis intention to schedule speak ers for the luncheon meetings on the second Wednesday of each month, while tlie meet ings on tlie fourth Wednesday w ill be business sessions. The Sieakers may be from the local area or Irom Eugene, Salem, Portland, San Francisco where ever anyone is available who has a message of vital Ktletvst or importance to (lie local chamber membership. Atjasl Wednesday's meeting Tresident Slllwell announced the assignment of directors to the seven major work areas con tained in the chamber's 7 by '70 long range development pro gram. ; NEWS, Klamath Falls, Oregon first of May and 2.25 pounds per day since his birth. The reserve champion bull, raised by the Bennett Hereford Ranch of Chico, Calif., was pur chased by Brice Eucr of Fol som, Calif., for $800. The high gaining bull of the bull test, owned by the Pitch fork Cattle Company Bf Vinton, Calif., was bought by,Bill Cock rell of Eaglcville for $500. Inter esting to AW was that although this bull was the 34th offered for sale and the sale average on the hulls had begun to drop, it jumped back up on the top gain ing bull. He showed a daily gain of 3.27 per day. This showed the buyers faith in the rate of gain statistics which have proven that offspring from fast gaining bulls are also fast gaining calves. Carl L. Garrison, recently nominated "Cattleman of t h e Year for'" California," bought nine of the top 20 bulls for the Porter Estate Cattle Company. This work, through the cham ber's own publication, "K c y notes," all members will be asked to fill out a questionnaire indicating the area or areas In which they would like to serve as committee members. It is an ticiwled that by the time of the board's policy and planning meeting in Novemlwr, all com mittees will bo organized, fully stuffed, and ready to move ahead on both their prosiam of work for this year and the long range plans for the years be tween now and 1970. Today flunks tlie start of Na tional Forest Products Week, a week whuh should and will re ceive more than casual observ ance in Kiamath County where our forest products contribute so extensively to tlie economy. Just how extensive this contri bution to the county's economy is can be gained from just a few statistics. According lo esti mates released by the. Western Pine Association, Klamath Coun ty mills produced 360,783,000 feet of lumlier durtng 1962 which was valued at approximately $27,829,373. Oliver ligures, released by tlie Klamath Kails oflice ol the Ore gon Department ol Kmplov mcnt Aiow peaK employment of 3.013 persons in logging and lumber in 1962 and the logging ami lum ber payroll durinif tlie year amounting to $15,3ii,2$6. Sunday, October 20, 1963 The next biggest buyer of the sale was Herman Weber of Al turas, who bought nine of the rate of gain bulls. The bulls were sifted and graded Saturday by a sifting committee on conformation and record of their rate of gain dur ing the test since May 1 and since the date of birth. The grade of the bull was de termined by the index rating formulated at the University of California at Davis. Each bull's rate of gain during the test and since birth, along with the con formation grade, was shown on the sale sheet and announced at the time of sale. There were 81 bulls put on pasture for the test. Two bulls were sifted by the committee and not entered in the sale.
