By RUTH KING Some interesting stories turn up at a reporter's desk in the course of a day's work. Some are almost in the realm of the fantastic and this is one of them. It concerns Alfeo Minato, now of Grants Pass, but who was raised and schooled in Chilo quiii, the son of pioneer Klam ath County parents, the late Anselmo Minato and Mrs. Min ato. The younger Minato is now en route to a foreign land, on busi ness. He was born abroad, in Italy, but he is an American citi zen. He has returned to various countricsffrom America on both business and pleasure. This trip takes him to Punjab Province, in the northern part of India on an economic feasibility survey for Forestal Internation al Inc., a consulting forestry, and forest engineering firm with headquarters in Vancouver, B.C. He will accompany the presi dent of the firm. Minato is an engineer. The firm, which also has a Portland office, was hired to make the survey to determine the practicality of proposed pulp, mill sites north of Delhi and to determine the most economic method of extracting raw ma terials for the mills from spruce timber. The trees are located in the foothills of the Himalayas at an elevation from 7,000 to 12, 000 feet. The survey will require two months. During that time, Mrs. Minato and the couple's two young children will remain at home in Grants Pass. It was at this point in the interview that Minato, a for mer U.S. Air Force gunner, told the story of finding his future wife. , In World War II his air squad ron, based in Southern Italy, was assigned a bombing mission to Innsbruck; Austria, with the railway station and the rail lines as targets. It was on a spring day in 1943. The bombs were dropped. The mission was completed. The U.S. planes flew back to base. Ten years later, in 1955, Alfeo Minato was again in Italy as a tourist, this time in Florence. He stood on a street corner, not sure of direction to a spot he planned to visit. A pretty girl came by a n d Minato, who spoke both Italian and English, asked for help. The pretty girl named Marcella. as sisted the young Italian-American to his destination. Alfeo Minato had planned to stay only six weeks in that country but remained for more than four months and married the pretty girl of the street corner in Flor ence. During their courtship they exchanged "life histories" and found tliat on tlie day the Amer icans, based in Italy, bombed the picturesque town of Inns bruck in Austria, Marcella, then a girl whose home was there, lied to the hills and hid among the rocks when the noise of tlie American bombers was heard beyond the horizon. Marcella waited in the United States for her husband to return from the Korean War where he also served with tlie U.S. Air Force. He is a graduate of Oregon State University in forest engi neering, is active in numerous civic activities in Grants Pass, and is junior past district gov ernor of the Dale Carnegie Alumni Association, a district that embraces Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and British Columbia.
